I just love this postcard.  Though as a Mom I'm saying to myself, "Where is that child's coat?!"  With all the snow and what looks like ice, it seems pretty cold.  lol  But what fun they're having--Christmas is near and they've loaded their sleigh with holly.  I imagine it will be used to decorate their home.

I have a special place in my heart for the Netherlands.  I love their traditions and stories and some of my ancestors came from there.

Happy New Year!  As I get older the years seem to go by more and more quickly. I can still remember when I was a child, summer lasted at least two years.

This postcard tickles my funny bone a bit.  That holly leaf dress must be incredibly prickly!  

Today I am thanking the Lord for His kindness and compassion over the past year, which has been one of great struggle.  I believe I am on my way back to strength and peace.  For that I am grateful.  I'm looking forward to seeing what the new year holds!

A Great Light -Postcard Friendship Friday #289

Thanksgiving was wonderful--family, friends, good food--lots of laughter and music.  It was joyful.  My Beloved husband, who left for heaven a little over a year ago, would have been delighted.  Our small niece was playing my daughter's tiny pink Ukulele.  And wow!  She is doing GREAT for her age--music runs in our veins.

In fact, after Thanksgiving dinner, we had a regular Hootenanny.  With three ukuleles, the big bass fiddle and a guitar we made quite a little band.  We sang and laughed and joked--ah, we made some precious memories yesterday. 

And now Christmas is just around the corner.  I have always loved Christmas--this year, with my sis and niece living with me, we will actually decorate for the holiday.

I am so glad we have a special day to celebrate the greatest story ever told.  Isaiah 9:2 of the Old Testament of the Bible prophesied, "The people who walk in darkness will see a great light; Those who live in a dark land, The light will shine on them."  God sent His dear One to earth--He is the light-bearer, the one honored at Christmas.

I love the idea of God's Light upon earth. Light is warmth and illumination.  I know what it is like to live in darkness and depression--feeling so lost and alone--these words found in Matthew 4:15 are a great comfort to me.  "The people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned."

Hearty Christmas Greetings -Guest Heart Thursday

I know Christmas is past, but I like to linger in its glow.  If you look closely--you can find hearts in the lovely fine lace and one made of berries. It is my heart's prayer that all of you--though you may be going through hard time, loss and great pain--would sense the love and comfort of our mighty Creator all around you.  

May God's lovingkindess bring you your heart's desire.

Isn't She Pretty?

Here is another postcard with those same three children.  The card is from Germany and says Warm Christmas Greetings.  I adore their outfits--especially the girl's buttoned boots--just perfect for a walk in the snow.  It's a good thing there's plenty of mistletoe in that bouquet she's holding, otherwise the holly would be quite prickly!

I'm not sure what is going on here, but it seems the little boy holding the girl's hand is saying, "Isn't she pretty?"  Perhaps the smaller fellow putting up such a fuss, is her brother and he is objecting. What do you think?

To Kiss the Girl

This card is from Germany and says Warm Christmas Greetings.  I adore this postcard. 

What tickles me is that the boy holding the mistletoe over the little girl's head is trying to kiss her!  She doesn't seem too adverse to the idea either.  The fellow behind him seems to be getting quite a kick out of the whole thing.   Ah, childhood.

What a wonderfully whimsical picture. 

Joy to Your Heart - Postcard Friendship Friday #104

Just recently, hearing about the crash of my external hard drive containing years of scans and my vast collection of ephemera, my good friend and Bro Phil sent this wonderful Christmas postcard.

I know Christmas is long past, yet still I find myself humming Christmas songs as I do my work around the house.  For me, the holiday is all year long and every day.

Though spring is just around the bend, I love the beauty of this postcard--the little girl in blue, holding holly leaves, surrounded by sparkling icicles.  She makes my heart happy!

Holly Tree Kitty - Postcard Friendship Friday #42

I especially love this vintage postcard because this sweet Holly Tree Kitty is the spitting image of my good old buddy Sir Brat T. Bone.  He lived with us for nearly 17 years before he flew away to Cat Heaven.  I still miss him.

Though there are many ancient traditions concerning holly trees, early in the first century holly leaves came to symbolize the crown of thorns pressed into the Lord's brow, as He suffered at the hands of Roman soldiers.  The red berries were said to symbolize His blood.  

In Britain, during the time of Oliver Cromwell, Christmas was actually banned by the Puritans!   But Christmas-loving country folk thwarted this ban by tying up rough bunches of  holly boughs with evergreens during the holiday, as a symbol of Christmas.  An ancient "Neener, neener," I think!  Tch tch tch, those naughty country Folk!  This became a tradition which has become the holly bough we know today.

Christmas Memories

Though Christmas is now a memory, this beautiful card captured my eyes this morning and I wanted to share it with you--Christmas can be celebrated all year long, right?

This is one of the cards from Grammie Jenny's collection. The rich, red color of the decorations and the delicate embossed gold snowflakes fill my eyes and please me no end.
