Round John Virgin -Postcard Friendship Friday #386

This wonderful vintage postcard brings back so many memories of the old nativity set I loved as a child, which still graces the home of my sweet Mumsie.

In our growing up years, each Christmas Mom would write a play.  Christmas Eve, I and my five siblings would perform for neighbors, friends and family.  As a part of the drama we would sing Silent Night.  It was our favorite Christmas song.

Then one late evening, our youngest brother, who was around four years old, asked Mom, "Who is Round John Virgin?"  Which, of course, sent us into transports of laughter.

Since that long ago Christmas day, a little round tin man, who goes by the name of Round John Virgin, sits next to Joseph, Mary and the Christ Child.  I still giggle a bit over that wonderful old memory.

Thank you for dropping by and taking a moment to walk with me down memory lane.  Merry Christmas, dear ones.  And Happy Postcard Friendship Friday!

A Great Light -Postcard Friendship Friday #289

Thanksgiving was wonderful--family, friends, good food--lots of laughter and music.  It was joyful.  My Beloved husband, who left for heaven a little over a year ago, would have been delighted.  Our small niece was playing my daughter's tiny pink Ukulele.  And wow!  She is doing GREAT for her age--music runs in our veins.

In fact, after Thanksgiving dinner, we had a regular Hootenanny.  With three ukuleles, the big bass fiddle and a guitar we made quite a little band.  We sang and laughed and joked--ah, we made some precious memories yesterday.

And now Christmas is just around the corner.  I have always loved Christmas--this year, with my sis and niece living with me, we will actually decorate for the holiday.

I am so glad we have a special day to celebrate the greatest story ever told.  Isaiah 9:2 of the Old Testament of the Bible prophesied, "The people who walk in darkness will see a great light; Those who live in a dark land, The light will shine on them."  God sent His dear One to earth--He is the light-bearer, the one honored at Christmas.

I love the idea of God's Light upon earth. Light is warmth and illumination.  I know what it is like to live in darkness and depression--feeling so lost and alone--these words found in Matthew 4:15 are a great comfort to me.  "The people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned."

Merry Christmas dear ones.  May God bless you with His light, joy and comfort.

A Merry Christmas -Postcard Friendship Friday #198

Some of my favorite memories surround the well worn, chipped figurines of the nativity set from my childhood.  Inevitably one would find a stuffed bear, a tiny doll or a plastic dinosaur kneeling by the side of the tiny Baby.  Mumsie still puts it up every year.  She doesn't take it down until the first flower of spring.

I love the idea of this enchanting angel patiently re-telling these children the Greatest Story ever told.

Merry Christmas and Happy Postcard Friendship Friday!

All Creatures Big and Small - Guest Heart Thursday

I received this card sometime in the 1970's.  I loved it so much I saved it.  I really like the way this artist portrayed the animals and that darling little Baby.  Yes, if you look there are at least four hearts in this picture.  How many hearts can YOU find?  Have a lovely week!

The Christmas Story - Postcard Friendship Friday #43

This postcard brought back some sweet Christmas memories.  I wanted to share one of them with you.  The beautiful old Nativity scene from my childhood is still a Christmas tradition at my parent's home.  When I was over to visit recently, I found it nestled beneath the fragrant boughs of the Christmas tree.

When I was small, I loved to sit and look at the figurines of the Nativity--and, with my vivid imagination, I could almost see them moving and talking to one another.

Mom tells a story which happened when I was around four years old.  Dear Mumsie had cleaned the living room in anticipation of guests about to arrive for dinner.  Mom strictly told my little brother and me not to mess up the room, then left to do some last minute things in the kitchen.

We were very quiet.  And you know what that means!  When Mum returned a short time later, she discovered my brother and I had arranged a string of broken toys leading across the floor, up to where Baby Jesus lay.  There was a sheep with a broken leg, a doll without an arm, a statue without a head, a stuffed rabbit without his ears--and much more.  Just about anything cracked or broken--was lined up in front of the Nativity Scene.

Mumsie knew who the ringleader was--with my parade of broken dolls and stuffed animals, I had totally thrashed the living room.  At first Mum was upset, admonishing me to hurry and clean up the mess.  But I wailed, "But Mama, I'm bringing all the broken things to Jesus!"

Mom says she melted when she heard those words.  She hugged me and left everything just as it was.  What a wise Mom!

I can see this funny scene in my mind's eye--and someday I shall draw it.  Even then, as a small child, I somehow knew Jesus as the healer of broken hearts and lives.

And now my prayer for you, dear friends!  May your Christmas be one of great healing, joy and celebration!  Merry Christmas!
