I love this old postcard--such a sweet innocence about it.  I often saw rainbows when I kissed my Beloved.  Covid-19 still has the world in lock down.  Or, as they call it here in the US, the "stay in place," order.  I will be glad when this pandemic ceases.

A Modern Siren

Even in the age when swimsuits were not as small as they are today--this young woman is lovely.  I like the sleeves on that vintage suit--and there's no denying the young man finds her attractive.

Summer days are here!  I'm blessed in that from where I live, I'm an hour from the desert, the mountains, the forests and the ocean--it just depends upon which direction I decide to take!

I love the way the young man is looking at this gentle maiden.  However her companion the Dog seems a bit suspicious.  What a beautiful postcard.  I wonder if she WILL go for ride in that boat upon the lake.

I finally went to the doctor--looks like I have pneumonia.  Thankfully I may be over the worst of this soon.

I am sorry for not posting last week.  I was hosting a drama camp in my home for a group of little girls.  We had SUCH a great time!  I was totally distracted by all that had to be done beforehand.

I adore this postcard.  The old costumes and the sweetness of love and daisies.  Summertime sweethearts.  I miss my Beloved, walking hand in hand at the park... His funny stories, his laughter--the way he saw life.

Its National Ice Cream Month! -Postcard Friendship Friday #367

This postcard features ice cream spoons.  I have tried to discover the history of the ice cream spoon, but was unable to unearth much of anything!  I did, however find a lot about spoons.  The first time the ordinary spoon was mentioned comes from England in 1259 when it was described as a part of the first King Edward's wardrobe!  In that time spoons were not only used for eating, but were worn as a mark of wealth and power.  In fact, the coronation of every king of England was followed by the ritual "anointing" of the special spoon. 

There are spoons for eating just about anything--including ice cream.  Some ice cream spoons have a fluted side to them, others are like today's "spork."  

It is no wonder people invented a spoon just for ice cream.  This icy dessert has become such an important part of our culture it has even been honored in recent times.  In 1984, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed the month of July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday of the month as National Ice Cream Day.

He recognized ice cream as a delicious, nutritious food enjoyed by nearly 100 percent of the nation's population. In this important proclamation, the president called for all people of the United States to celebrate various events honoring ice cream with all due "appropriate ceremonies and activities."

Ice cream may seem like a small bite of summer, but in reality it is wildly popular year round.  The ice cream industry in the United States contributes more than $39.0 billion to the national economy and creates more than 188,000 jobs in communities across the country.

As for me?  I love all kinds of ice cream—but French Vanilla bean is my favorite.  What is yours?

I miss my the love of my life and his kisses--Valentine's Day was special to us both, so it is a bittersweet holiday these days.  However, even though my Beloved is in heaven, I still love Valentine's Day.

I know this is a strawberry soda, or perhaps an old fashioned milkshake--but I chose this postcard, because I couldn't find one which would exactly fit today's fabulous holiday.

Hurrah!  It’s Chocolate Milkshake Day!  Though no one knows when this holiday began, or who started it, one must admit chocolate milkshake in September has a lot of charm.  Especially here in Oregon, where we have experienced record-breaking heat this summer.

There's more good news--I have heard it said that on this day, a chocolate milkshake has no calories.  Now that is good news indeed!

Valentine's Day postcards are my favorites.  These artists of old used such funny, creative ideas in them.  In fact, the children in this postcard seem to be little people, a lot older than kids.

I love the scarf the girl is wearing and that car is just amazing!  Notice the license plate with its 50-50.  Ah, but as everyone knows, when one is in love and in marriage, one doesn't just give fifty fifty--it's 100/100 on both sides.  That and lots of laughter.

July is nearly here, with its sparkle and pagentry--especially here in the United States for the Fourth of July.   The air is filled with sparklers, feisty poppers punctuate the night air.  Flags fly and red, white and blue are everywhere.

In days of old it seems romance included the "chase."  That lovely merry way of man pursuing woman.  He gets a bit close, she moves that much farther away.  Mystery moves in her eyes and he cannot resist her.  The best romance ends well when he chases her until she catches him.

In this marvelous postcard, I laugh to myself, wondering how that girl could possibly keep her eyes on the stage below.  With that handsome young fellow staring so intently as he is, no wonder her cheeks are flushed!  One gets the idea it won't be long before she is thoroughly kissed!  But perhaps she will keep him at arms length--with a come hither glint.  Ah, the chase, ah, young love...

Good Old Summertime - Postcard Friendship Friday #69

Though it is officially summer now, summertime has been slow in visiting the Pacific Northwest. Happily, the weather man says sunshine may finally break through our grey drizzly clouds. Speaking of drizzly scribbles -- the back of this postcard made me laugh. I wonder what that was all about?

My sisters and I were what we used to call tomboys. Back then, my siblings, cousins and I would often head for the canyon, where we built forts under the cedar trees, teepees from fir branches and followed deer trails to incredibly magical places. We learned to walk barefoot through the woods without a sound. We waded in the cold "crik" waters, chased crawdads, metallic colored bugs and beautiful butterflies. We sampled huckleberries, thimble berries, wild blackberries and strawberries. We learned to eat sour grass, licorice fern root, wild mint and water cress.

Everything changed the day I suddenly became aware of boys as more than buddies. I remember when a friend of mine taught me how to go "sparking" with a fellow in the moonlight -- which, isn't what you think. Did you know wintergreen breath mints spark in your teeth when you chew them in the dark? 'Tis true. You ought to try it -- especially with a fellow you love, under a smiling summer moon.

Ah, good old summertime!

Law of the Desert

I was perusing the books on the shelf of a local antique store, when I came upon a fascinating book from the 1920's. This picture was in the flyleaf.

I enjoy old books, especially those written around the turn of the century as this one was. The romance was set in the deserts of Arabia, and ends in tragedy on one side and enduring love on the other. 

The first time I saw this book I didn't buy it, because I like happy endings, and thought this one ended unhappily. I have had enough of tragedy in real life. Later on, I did buy the book, and realized there was a happy ending for the heroine and hero--but not for the black-hearted thief who tried to end their lives.

I just love old books from around the turn of the century!

Our anniversary -Postcard Friendship Friday

My husband and I have been away for a few days celebrating our 26th wedding anniversary. I have officially been married more than half my life. And what an adventure it has been!

If had the chance, I would not go back and do anything different. Except maybe kiss him a little more often.

Thanks to fellow postcard lovers out there who are willing to share, I have been able to start a "cyber postcard collection." Thank you every one of you! I am not sure where this one came from, but the tenderness and mischief of this particular postcard remind me of my husband and me.
