Happiness Is...

This is a card I received from my Best Friend in High School.  His name was Eric and I loved  him.  Our paths grew apart and I have not seen him for many years.  He was one of those special people who inspired me to greater things--thank you, Buddy.

This card somehow catches the essence of the 1970's for me.  This is the way it was back then.

Thinking of You, my Friend

With the New Year looming closer, I am reminded of the treasure of friendship. True and real friends are VERY hard to find. When one finds such a precious gift--one cultivates it.

This wonderful card is another from our Grammie Jenny's collection. It was sent by her lifetime friend Ruth. Reading the notes and cards Ruth sent, I see the beauty of a loyal friend. A sister who never took her friend for granted, cultivating their friendship like a flower garden.

So dear friends (you know who you are), I am counting YOU as one of the beautiful blessings in my life--you are indeed precious.

A Garden Without Flowers

This is one of the wonderful cards our Grandma Jenny's best friend Ruth sent most likely in the late 1950's. This card touches my heart--I have such wonderful friends. Dear precious friends. I am so grateful for the fragrant friendship flowers in the garden of my life.

Life without friends would be like a garden without flowers.

So I have to ask--if you were a plant growing in a garden, what would you be? I'm thinking I might be a purple cauliflower combined with violets and a rose. . .

Imaginary Friends

When children are playing alone on the green,
In comes the playmate that never was seen.
When children are happy lonely and good,
The Friend of the Children comes out of the wood.
.
Nobody heard him and nobody saw,
His is a picture you never could draw,
But he's sure to be present, abroad or at home,
When children are happy and playing alone.
.
He lies in the laurels, he runs on the grass,
He sings when you tinkle the musical glass;
Whene'er you are happy and cannot tell why,
The Friend of the Children is sure to be by!

This poem and picture comes from my wonderful yet tattered book of Children's poetry.

When I was a child, I had unseen friends. We played in the field and the woods together. I remember how I imagined them--beautiful faeries with gorgeously colored wings. Their clothing caught the color of their surroundings. Sometimes I could see them in my imagination, other times I did not. But I was never lonely.
.
Daddy Update: I drove Dad and Mumsie to the Veteran's Hospital. The broken bones in Dad's neck are seated in nicely, but are not healing as quickly as hoped. The surgeon says Dad will wear his neck brace for six months. Dad's bones are soft, and if the bones do not heal, they will have do surgery. The surgeon says the surgery is risky. Please pray Dad defies all expectations and heals faster than anyone could anticipate. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers!

Forget Me Nots

This is a page from a wonderful little book given to me by my precious friend Marian, who flew away to heaven some time back. The book is called Friendship's Token.

She writes, Beth, I do hope you enjoy the little book. It was given to my mother long before I arrived on the scene, so it is very old, but it had the sentiment I wanted to share with you. Oh, yes. I agree with you on telling people you love them. When my grandfather died my grandmother said, "Oh, I hope he knew I loved him." So sad. But you do know my love. We are the kind of friends who, at any time or place can say, "and" and go on.

Marian's beautiful book on Friendship was printed by Cupples Lamp; Leon, located in New York. There is no publish date, but the inside is signed, To Maria from Aunty Ford. Marian included an old photograph of her Mother. On the back there is a quaint note, "We have one like it, so thee may keep it."

I often think of Marian and of the tremendous influence she had in my life when who I am now was still forming. What a wonderful woman she was. I will never forget her. I am looking forward to meeting up with my friend in heaven to say, "and" and go on.
