Today is Friday the 13th--rather than dwell upon bad luck and other such negativity, I decided to focus upon the love and beauty of family. 

These children having tea together is such a charming picture. Of course, in my family, my brother would have made mud pies and we would have tried to eat them. LOL Still, this is a pretty picture of sibling kindness.

Treasure your family, dear ones.  Life is short and we never know what the future holds.

Who would Not be a Father? -Postcard Friendship Friday #412

A loving Father is not only a blessing to his own family, but he is a blessing to the entire world.  His caring actions ripple out through his children, his children's children, his children's children's children...down through the ages. 

I am grateful to have had a wonderful Father.  He was brave, gentle and strong and loved to laugh.  He provided for our needs and He was a good man who helped strangers and always knew exactly what to say.  He told imaginative stories that still live in my heart to this day.

He was an artist--you can find tiny sketches in his Bible, just like me.  I am the eldest of six.  Daddy loved all of us so.  Each of us had a special bond with him.   I was in trouble he knew it instinctively--and the same was true of me.  Dad was our hero, and he taught us unconditional love.

The Lads They Loved so Dear -Postcard Friendship Friday #409

What a beautiful postcard.  By the style of the clothing this family wears, I surmise this vintage postcard is from the early 1900's around the time of WWI.  

Sadly, it seems the family pictured here has lost both husband and father.  In those days it would have been incredibly difficult for a widow to raise her family alone. Indeed, my heart goes out to all those who have lost their loved ones in war, regardless of which nation they defended.

Here in America, this is Memorial Day Weekend, a time of reflection and remembrance of the sacrifices our military men and women willingly made for family, home and country.  

Monday Memorial Day, all across our great country, Americans will specifically honor the soldiers who gave so much.  Their sacrifice is the reason we are free.

My family and I will visit Dad, a WW2 Veteran and a POW in Nazi Germany, at Willamette National Cemetery with its acres of flagged graves.  So many of them--the sight always brings me to tears.  I pray we will NEVER take any of these amazing individuals for granted.

Happy Father's Day to all those wonderful Dads out there. Today I miss my own dear Daddy who flew away to heaven almost four years ago.  I know my precious children are missing their Dad today, too. My Beloved was a good Daddy.

Dear Little Children

I have missed you, dear ones--you know who you are.  I have been praying as have many others.  You are treasured more than you know.

I adore this Postcard.  Aren't these little ones darling?  Children are the same across the world.  This postcard actually reminds me of the artwork of my own Great Aunt Martina Gangle.  All her life she wore a scarf in just the way these children do.  I have fond memories of the time I spent with her when I was younger.  I didn't know then, that she was an important Oregon artist during the Great Depression.  She gently encouraged me when I drew pictures for her at family reunions.  I can still remember her affectionate smile and twinkling eyes.

Above is an example of Aunt Martina's artwork.  It is an excerpt from one of the murals she painted.  Ah, what a blessing to have such a precious heritage.

It is Springtime here in the valley.  I pray your days will be beautiful with joy, hope and peace.

Christmas and New Years Greetings

I enjoy pictures and drawings of Christmas as it is celebrated in far lands.  This lovely Christmas postcard depicting a family celebration of Christmas from across the ocean, just blesses my heart.

I was wondering, what game are these two playing?  I am so very curious.  If you know, I 'd love to hear from you.

UPDATE:  Thank you Irene!  This appears to be an Asian version of the game of dreidel.  It is a game played during the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah. A dreidel is a four-sided spinning top.  Each side of the dreidel bears a letter of the Hebrew alphabet, which together form the acronym for Nes Gadol Hayah Sham, meaning "a great miracle happened there."

According to ancient Jewish tradition, there was a time when the people hid in caves to teach the Torah.  Legend has it when the teacher would hear soldiers approaching, he would instruct the children to hide their Torah scrolls and take out their dreidels instead. 

So--now you know!  

For the Sake of Argument -Postcard Friendship Friday #181

This is our week of family gatherings and reunions!  My brother and his delightful family are visiting from out of town, then there's a big reunion later on at my Uncle's place. 

Which brings to mind some of my favorite reunion memories.  I have written about how much, as a child, I loved to listen to Dad's brothers and sisters debate every topic under the sun--yet how much love they had for one another.

I once asked Mom why they argued so much.  She smiled and said, "For the sake of the argument."  Which seemed perfectly plausible to me.
