Fowerty-Frappers! -Postcard Friendship Friday #126

So, do you know what fowerty-frappers are?  This is a term I just discovered which means Fireworks of any kind!  It is an old fashioned term from Joseph Wright's English Dialect Dictionary, of 1896-1905.

On the Fourth of July, here in America, we celebrate the holiday with parades, good food and lots of fowerty-frappers!  In 1840, Chevalier de Bacourt, France's Minister-Plenipotentiary said of the Fourth, "...It is celebrated in every part of America, if not with suitable splendor at least with prodigious noise."

The following year, Minister Chevalier de Bacourt complained, "Yesterday was the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence of the United States, but as it fell on Sunday they put off until today the celebration of the annual holiday, and I have been kept awake since five o'clock this morning by the incessant noise of cannons and firecrackers.  That is the American fashion of showing their satisfaction.  To them, noise personifies joy!"

Ah, things haven't changed one bit since 1840!

Have a lovely weekend and Happy Postcard Friendship Friday!

To Wish You Joy -Postcard Friendship Friday #125

Here in the Willamette Valley of Oregon, we have had such a beautiful Spring and now an early Summer.  Normally this time of year, it is like an underwater garden outside.  This year has been rather special.  Such incredibly beautiful weather.  The very air itself seems to rejoice.  These roses seem to embody that happiness.

Have a lovely day, everyone.  Happy Postcard Friendship Friday!

The Spirit of Liberty -Postcard Friendship Friday #124

Saturday is Flag Day. Flag Day celebrates the day the American Flag was actually adopted as our own on June 14, 1777, by resolution of the Second Continental Congress.

In our town, flags line the sidewalks and fly from people’s houses.  This year, there is a new addition to the day’s celebration; The River’s Edge Music Fest!  There will be two stages, and a flock of famous bands and singers performing.  There's a likely audience of over 5,000 people flooding into town that day.  What fun!

And tomorrow is my birthday, too!  What a great day it will be.  Have a lovely weekend everyone, and Happy Postcard Friendship Friday!

To Our Dear Fathers -Postcard Friendship Friday #123

This year, Father's Day will be on June 15th.  I am deeply grateful to God for giving me my Father.  Dad taught us about God the Father--Daddy's gentleness, kindness, strength and unconditional love showed us God's loving face.  We were greatly blessed to have had such a good Father. I miss him, more than I can put into mere words.

I thank God for my husband, who has been, and continues to be a wonderful Father to our children.  The relationship between Dads and their children is so important.  There is much to be learned from a loving Father.

As I think about it--I am incredibly thankful to Our Creator for all Dads who love and provide for  their children.

Note:  Google seems to be having troubles the past few weeks.  I haven't been able to comment on your links off and on.  So, I'm taking a moment here to thank everyone who participated in Postcard Friendship Friday this week!  As soon as Google gets the problem fixed, I'll be commenting on your blogs!  Have a lovely weekend.

Greet My Heart -Guest Heart Thursday

This postcard is so sweet--I love her bloomers, and the way her wings sprout from her shoulder blades.  The flowers on the heart and hearts in the basket are such a dear touch.  Just perfect for Guest Heart Thursday!  The note to her Mom on the back of the postcard, is, er, interesting.

A Stitch and a Prayer

I'm SO excited to tell you about Mumsie's most recent book, A Stitch and a Prayer.  It is coming out in the next few weeks.  To order your own copy, visit Abingdon Press. You can also contact Abingdon Press via Facebook!

As I type this, a preview copy rests on my desk beside the keyboard.  I'm so proud of Mom, so honored to have been a part of editing and getting everything ready for the publisher.  My sweet Mumsie is one of my best Friends.  I am so blessed to have her as my Mom.  It is a privilege to share her with you.

The setting for this book is next door to the farm where Mom was born.  It is a fictional account, but so much of what Mom wrote is based on true life.

Here is a description from the back of A Stitch and a Prayer:

My darling darling wife, I wanted to wake you and tell you I was leaving.  But I hate goodbyes.  I am trying to keep the promise I made to you. Hold onto this note until you receive a letter.  This is my promise to write as soon as I can.  Your loving husband, Will

It seemed like just yesterday when Will had returned from the Klondike gold rush, when they had celebrated their wedding, and when they began their life together in the Northwest woods.  But now Florence's husband was gone and only this note remained.  Where did Will go?  And why did he leave so abruptly?

As worry and fear threaten to overcome her, Florence is inspired to craft a quilt to grace the bed she knows she will once again share with Will.  The design of the quilt is a labor of love and each stitch is a prayer for her husband's safe return.  But will Florence's prayers be answered?  Will her husband keep his promise and come back to her before their baby arrives?

Goodbye Dear Friend

Yesterday afternoon, our friend Leon Hyatt was in a serious bicycle accident and was not expected to make it through the night.  Early this morning, Leon left this earth for an eternity in heaven.

Over the years, Leon, his sweet wife Denise and younger children have been a great encouragement to us, taking part in our drama performances.  This was so unexpected.  We are all heartbroken.  May God comfort this precious family as they are facing life without Leon.
