I Think You're Terrific - Guest Heart Thursday

This is another Valentine's Day Card from my collection.  Made in the USA in the late 1940's, this delightful card is itself terrific!  This girl reminds me of someone I knew once upon a time.  I like the way the artist drew her folded hands and the way her eyes twinkle--I am sure she's just a little mischievous.

Cupid -- EEEeeeek!

I can't remember where I found this funny old painting--suffice it to say, one shouldn't mess with Cupid!  lol  When love grabs hold of the heart--it does drive us along, doesn't it?

Angel Prayers - Pink Saturday

I love this picture--it is one which inspires me.  This  artist is just amazing--oh to be able to draw like THIS!

Yesterday morning I read about Angels in the Psalms, found in the Old Testament of the Bible.  "Praise the Lord, you His angels, you mighty ones who do His bidding, who obey His word.  Praise the Lord, all His heavenly hosts, you His servants who do His will.  Praise the Lord, all His works everywhere in His dominion.  Praise the Lord, Oh my soul."  Psalm 103:20-22

I like the idea of God's angels here on earth doing His will--watching over our children and people who love Him.  I have seen the invisible hands of angels more than once in our travels.  I am so glad God sends them to protect us!

Thanskgiving - Postcard Friendship Friday #37

It is November, the month in which Americans celebrate Thanksgiving.  But on November 12, we also honor veterans on Veteran's Day--thanking them for their service to our country.

Today I am thankful for my Grandfather who served in WW1, for Dad who was captured by Nazi's in WW2, for Uncle Joe who served in Vietnam, for Uncle Kelly who served in Korea, for my brother in law Guy who served in Desert Storm, and for my nephew David who serves our country today.  But I am thankful--not just for these who are precious to me, but to the thousands of men and women across the world--from many countries--who sacrifice daily to keep the world safe.

Thanksgiving Rose - Pink Saturday

 I fell in love with this little Thanksgiving Rose.  It reminds me of some of the things I draw and appeals to my whimsical nature.  I have never seen another thanksgiving postcard quite like this one.

Turkey Day - Postcard Friendship Friday #36

Isn't this just the cutest postcard?  I think that child should be a little scared --That bird is bigger than he is!  One gets the idea the boy is dreaming about something...maybe Thanksgiving dinner?

Did you know President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving as an official holiday in the United States on October 3, 1863?  It is another great reason Lincoln is one of my favorite presidents!   Sarah Hale, editor of Godey's Lady's Magazine lobbied for 17 years to declare Thanksgiving as a national holiday.  By 1916, Thanksgiving was referred to in writings as Turkey Day--And I thought that was a modern title!

Did you know President Franklin D. Roosevelt actually attempted to move the Thanksgiving to earlier in November? As a depression recovery strategy, he thought the change would encourage a longer Christmas shopping season. But the idea didn't fly and was shut down by Congress.  In 1941 the official date was declared permanently as the fourth Thursday in November.

Give Me a Tumble - Guest Heart Thursday

I've never really liked clowns--and this sneaky looking fellow is no exception.  But this morning, his dastardly looks, combined with that, er, funny slogan, hit my funnybone.  This pop-up Valentine's Day Card is printed on very thick paper.  It was probably from the 1930's and was made in the USA.

Gift of Pumpkin - Pink Saturday

I love this artist's work.  The children seem so alive--how their eyes sparkle!  This little girl with her perky pink ribbons seems quite delighted at the boy's offering.

Black Cats - Postcard Friendship Friday

First of all, dear friends, I apologize for getting PFF up so late in the day--I have been quite ill this week, and fell behind. 

I adore this postcard!  The little girl's dress is just adorable.  I think I want one!  I have loved black cats since I was a little girl and am now a collector of them.  When my father was a boy, he had a black cat named Snow.  When I was small we also had a black cat named Snow--and today my children are loved by a black cat named Snow--though her name has reverted to Snowbunny. 

Most of what we hear about black cats is bad.  But in fact, folklore surrounding black cats varies from culture to culture. In Great Britain, black cats are a symbol of good luck. The Scottish believe a strange black cat's arrival to the home signifies prosperity. Furthermore, it is believed that a lady who owns a black cat will have many suitors.  I rather thought today's postcard fit that bit of folklore!

Elf On a Tree

What a fun postcard this is!  So beautifully drawn, with such a whimsical idea.  I'm not sure the elf would appreciate being sent in our present day mailing system--but from the look on the little fella's face, he seems to be delighted to "hang" with the lady.
