Mad at a Thistle -Postcard Friendship Friday #341

I wonder what the thistle did to make that little Dwarf so upset!  lol  He sure is giving it a tongue lashing!  I would love to listen in as the butterfly fluttering overhead.  What a fun conversation that might be, eh?

There is still snow and ice on the ground, but the sun is shining brightly over all--it is a cold, crisp day.

I have enjoyed the snow so much.  We've had two storms come through--only about four inches each time, but ah, it has been beautiful.  I have had mixed feelings, though--how I would have loved to have shared the beauty of the snow with my Beloved.  Still--life is good and full.

Happy Birthday J.R.R. Tolkien -Postcard Friendship Friday #201

 

I have been a fan of J.R.R. Tolkien since my Father introduced me to his books when I was a little girl.  Tolkien's writing was so vivid, when the movie came out a few years ago--each character was just as I had imagined.

I can still remember Daddy chuckling over the antics of the awful Gollum.  I read Tolkien's stories for my own small son--complete with accents, voices, dramatics and such--so the tradition has been passed along.

It is J.R.R. Tolkien's birthday today.  His full name was John Ronald Reuel Tolkien.  He was born September 3, 1892.  He was an author, academic, student, professor, philologist, linguist, and poet. He created his own languages, complete with grammar rules. He created the world of Middle Earth--so real it seems it must surely have existed and may still be found one day.  

Artwork from my girlhood was often influenced by what I read in The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings series.  There is a beauty and magic about his work which touches my imagination and always will.

Meadowland

This gorgeous postcard by Sulamith Wulfing only recently became a part of my "cyber" collection. I have a weakness for fairies and all things whimsical, so this wonderful drawing with it's beautiful colors and unique style especially caught my imagination.

The Ungrateful Enchanter

Here is another illustration from the fairytale Snow White and Rose Red, found in one of the books from my collection. The dwarf pictured here is really an evil enchanter, who's beard is caught in a tree. The two lovely sisters free the ungrateful little fellow, who then stomps off into the woods.

Later in the story the girls rescue and befriend a bear who is really a prince, under a spell cast by the dwarf. To make a long story short, eventually the bear-prince eats the evil little spell-caster and the enchantment is broken.

The artist's work is beautiful, and the details are exquisite. Enjoy!

Snow White and Rose Red

I love the rich colors of this wonderful postcard. It is a reproduction of of an antique postcard, printed in the USA on 100% recycled paper, by the Evergreen Press in Walnut Creek, California.

The postcard reminds me of the old fairytale about Snow White and Rose Red. The two lovely sisters, one blonde, one brunette, live in a cottage in the forest. Going about their daily activities, they keep rescuing an ungrateful old dwarf from certain death and danger. They also befriend a rather large and hairy bear, feeding and sheltering him through the winter. Turns out the bear is not a bear at all. He is a handsome prince who has been put under a terrible spell by the same dastardly dwarf.

At the end of the tale, the bear pounces upon the grizzled little enchanter and eats him up! The spell is broken, the bear skin falls away, and of course, the just-released prince marries Snow White. He introduces Rose Red to his younger brother--and they all live happily ever after. (grin)
