Blue Moon -Postcard Friendship Friday #131

Today is special because this evening there will be a rare Blue Moon.  You've heard the saying, "that happens once in a blue moon."  The truth is, a blue moon isn't actually blue.  It is the rare occurrence of two full moons in one month's time.  I've always loved the idea of a blue moon--of course, the real explanation is a lot less romantic than what I imagined when I was young.

This wonderful old postcard expresses my youthful idea of a romantic Blue Moon.

Vesuvius Day -Postcard Friendship Friday #130

August 24, 79 A.D. was the day Mount Vesuvius erupted in a huge explosion. To date, it is known as one of the largest volcanic explosions in recorded history.  This deadly volcano destroyed the Roman cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Stabiae. For years these cities were lost, buried by volcanic ash and pumice.

The tremendous loss of life and utterly stupendous power of Mt. Vesuvius is commemorated today on Vesuvius Day.

Having witnessed (from afar) the horrific explosion of Mt. Saint Helens in the Pacific Northwest in 1980, having seen the heartbreaking pictures of those who lost their lives, having read the accounts of those who actually lived through that terrible blast, I have a healthy respect for volcanoes.

I can't even imagine the size and scope of what happened the day Mt. Vesuvius erupted.  Even though this terrible event happened over a thousand years ago, I remember those who lost their lives that day.  The plaster castings of the people who died there deeply touch my heart.  Real people.  So long ago.  Yet they once lived--may we never forget them.

National Thriftshop Day -Postcard Friendship Friday #129

Today is National Thriftshop Day.  In the past a thriftstore was a place which sold items of various quality for a discount.  Here in the United States, Thrift stores sell gently used items, which often are donated.  I have been going to thriftshops since I was a small girl--with as many children as there were in our family--secondhand stores were a lifesaver for a family as big as ours.  My sister and I learned how to use Mom's sewing machine to shape clothing which was too big, into just the right size.  We have both used that skill throughout our lives.

I have great memories of thriftshops.  When we were single, Sissy and I would take an entire day and go "second hand store hopping" together  There were an incredible number of thrift stores on Highway 99. It was a hoot to drive from one to the next store.  We found some amazing things.  As little money as we earned in those days, one could still buy a bunch things without overspending.

Researchers do not know how this holiday got started--undoubtedly, a thriftshop somewhere started this special day to promote a summer sale!

Happy Second Hand store hopping!

Happy Anniversary -Postcard Friendship Friday #128

Tomorrow is a very special day.  Tomorrow our parents will have been married 55 years.  They have been loyal to one another through thick and thin, better and worse, richer and poorer.  They have fought together, loved together, suffered together, laughed together.

Their marriage has been a tremendously realistic role model of what true love is all about.  I am so grateful to them, for their love and care for one another over the years.

Happy 55th Anniversary, Dad and Mom!

Domestic Goddess Day - Postcard Friendship Friday #127

There are so many holidays listed for August 3rd, I can hardly choose which to honor!  It is Waffle Day in some towns, while others around our country celebrate National Park Day.  In the American mid-west, it is Watermelon Day and let's not forget this is the day the entire world celebrates International Forgiveness Day.  Then there are the Olympics with all the nations' fierce competition and joyous contesting of muscle and sinew.

But I have to admit, of all the holidays celebrated today, the one I like most is Domestic Goddess Day, which celebrates women and all they do for their families.  We are all special in our own way--this day celebrates the beauty and power found within every woman.  Whichever holiday, or activities you celebrate--have a perfectly glorious day!
