Watch the Flickering Flame -Postcard Friendship Friday #474

I like this postcard because of the cat.  The tiny black cat I dubbed "SnowBug Da'Bean" turns out to be a main coon.  In four months he is the size of my full-grown cat!  When he's full grown, he may be the size of a small dog--like the plucky black cat in the postcard.

Pumpkin Faces Dance and Gleam -Postcard Friendship Friday #472

What a darling Halloween Postcard!  I love the hanging pumpkin, and especially that wide-eyed black cat.  I have two cats now, Toez the Polydactyl Cat, and our new little friend SnowBug Da'Bean, who looks a great deal like the kitten under the shock-haired boy on this postcard!

Have a lovely weekend, Friends.  Happy Postcard Friendship Friday, and Happy Halloween!

Afraid of His Own Shadow -Postcard Friendship Friday #378

When I was a child, we lived on the edge of a vast forest.  The woods became our playground.  Especially one huge old fir tree next to our home.  We played under it so often the ground became as hard as a floor.  It was our outdoor playroom.

When Halloween came around we would decorate underneath that tree.  We would sweep the "floor" and hang little hand-made ghosts in the tree branches.   We created scary exhibits of goblins and frightening creatures using whatever we had around the house.  It was all great fun...until the sun went down.

Then we were so scared, we wouldn't dare venture out to see our creations, even using candles.  We were, haha, afraid of our own shadows.

Have a great weekend and Happy Postcard Friendship Friday!

The Great Pumpkin -Postcard Friendship Friday #191

As a child, I loved Charles Schultz' cartoon Peanuts.   Of course, this postcard is not exactly the Great Pumpkin who broke the heart of poor Linus every year.  When I was a small child I loved Linus.  His love for the great Pumpkin made me smile.  That little boy had an unusual amount of hope and perseverance--and I admired him for it.

It was Linus who sadly said, "There are three things I have learned never to discuss with people:  religion, politics and the Great Pumpkin."

To tell you the truth, the child inside still waits for the Great Pumpkin to appear.  (grin)  Perhaps this year he will!

Have a great weekend!

A Jolly Halloween -Postcard Friendship Friday #189

When I was a child, "us kids" loved to play beneath a tall fir tree in the woodlands behind where we lived.  We played there so often, the earth had become packed hard like a floor.  We would sweep the tree needles from the dirt floor with the fragrant ends of fir branches.

In October we sometimes would decorate our magical play place for Halloween.  Paper ghosts hung overhead from long pieces of thin string, jeans and shirt were stuffed to give the likeness of a scary headless man lurking in the shadows. There were places to sit, scraps of cloth spread over crookedly devised tables.  We had a some candles and carved pumpkins, of course.

But when it actually came time to go out into the forest on Halloween...in the dark.  We couldn't make ourselves move from the back porch to the woods.  We had so scared ourselves with ghoulish ghost stories and the like, we had become frightened of our own shadows!  Still--it was a GREAT deal of fun to decorate underneath that tree.

Have a jolly Halloween and Happy Postcard Friendship Friday!

Christmas Wishes

I love this postcard. It reminds me of our mountain lioness, Toez the Polydactyl Cat.  She is so cute.  I remember last year, Toez loved hiding beneath the Christmas tree.  We had a train around the tree for years.  But last year, dear Toez kept knocking it off the tracks.  So until she is old and sedate, the train will remain in the attic.  She has already been skittering around on the decorative cloth beneath the tree.  Knowing Toez--she'll be tempted to climb to the top.  Ha!  I can hardly wait.

Merry Christmas all you wonderful people!

Of Mice and Cats on Halloween -Postcard Friendship Friday #138

I love the whimsical nature of this wonderful Halloween Postcard.  The poem is interesting, as are the activities of the mice.  Anyone have any idea what is going on there?  I'm not sure what the deal is with the mouse in a blanket and the police mouse chasing him with a baton?!  The cat seems to be incidental to the storyline, except he looks rather intrigued and a bit hungry...

I wonder if this postcard could have been the inspiration for the children's book Halloween Mice by Bethany Roberts.  This delightfully illustrated book is the story of mice attending a party on Halloween night.  Of course, they are threatened by a hungry cat and must come up with an ingenious trick to scare him off.

I wanted to thank you for all your good thoughts and prayers concerning my husband.  His biopsy was Monday, tomorrow afternoon we hear back on the results of that test.  Would appreciate your continued prayer for my Beloved.

All-Time Favorite Halloween Postcard -Postcard Friendship Friday #136

This is my all-time favorite Halloween postcard.  Having a great fondness for black cats in general, this one always made me laugh.  Our black cat Snow often looked like this when she was about to do something dastardly.  How I miss that girl.

At any rate--'tis the month for postcards sporting black cats, witches, scary stories, ghosts and pumpkins!  Have a lovely day, everyone!

Clinique Cheron

Isn't this a charming advertisement?  In the tradition of Art Nouveau, this graceful girl and her loving friends bring a smile to my face.

Today is the beginning of summer and time outside in the sun with our furred and feathered friends.  How grateful I am for their loving companionship.

Friday the 13th - Postcard Friendship Friday #111

Friday the 13th is said to be one of the unluckiest days of all.  I did some research on the historic origins of this day—but it appears no one seems to know exactly why this day is considered to be so unlucky—though there are plenty of interesting theories out there!

Some superstitious folks actually live in fear until the day is past.  Years ago, my darling husband started a Phobiologologist Club.  The way to become a member was to find a phobia word he'd never heard of, or to come up with a new phobia word which made him laugh!  The fear of Friday the 13th has been dubbed friggatriskaidekaphobia.  The word is a combination of Frigga -- the name of a Norse goddess for whom "Friday" is named and triskaidekaphobia meaning fear of the number thirteen.

It is interesting to note that in some cultures, Friday the 17th is considered to be far worse than Friday the 13th!  I guess it is all a matter of perspective.

Thank you dear ones, for all your thoughts and prayers over last week.  The blood tests ALL came back normal and other tests showed only one small cyst which they will be watching closely.  I go back for a mammogram every six months for awhile.  All that is left to be done is to visit a dermatologist specialist.  Once that is done, I will be home free.  Thanks again.

Black Cats - Postcard Friendship Friday

First of all, dear friends, I apologize for getting PFF up so late in the day--I have been quite ill this week, and fell behind.

I adore this postcard!  The little girl's dress is just adorable.  I think I want one!  I have loved black cats since I was a little girl and am now a collector of them.  When my father was a boy, he had a black cat named Snow.  When I was small we also had a black cat named Snow--and today my children are loved by a black cat named Snow--though her name has reverted to Snowbunny.

Most of what we hear about black cats is bad.  But in fact, folklore surrounding black cats varies from culture to culture. In Great Britain, black cats are a symbol of good luck. The Scottish believe a strange black cat's arrival to the home signifies prosperity. Furthermore, it is believed that a lady who owns a black cat will have many suitors.  I rather thought today's postcard fit that bit of folklore!

International Left Hander's Day! - Happy Postcard Friday #24

Yes, it is Friday the Thirteenth--hence this hilarious postcard I found online sometime ago.  However it is also, happily, International Left Hander's Day!  This delightful holiday was first celebrated on August 13, 1976.  It was started by Lefthander's International.

Did you Know?

    * While many people are left handed, very few are 100% left handed. For example, many Left handers golf and bat right handed. On the other hand, there is a high percentage of righties who are 100% right-handed.
     * Sinistrophobia is the fear of left-handedness, or things on the left side.
    * Lefties are also called "southpaws."  The term was coined in baseball to describe a left handed pitcher.
    * Tuesdays are Lefties luck day.
    * Only about 10% of the population is left handed.
    * During the 1600's, people thought left handers were witches and warlocks.
    * It is believed that all polar bears are left handed.
    * There is a rumor octopi have but one right hand. Scientists are diligently studying this issue.
    * Right handed people operate in the left side of the brain. Left handed people use the right side. Therefore, only left handed people are in their right mind?

Lefthander's Slogan:  Everyone is born right-handed. Only the greatest overcome it.

I am ambidextrous! When I use chopsticks, or eat using utensils with my left hand, things actually taste different--suffice it to say, I think it may be true that Left Handers do indeed experience the world a little differently than the rest.

Happy International Left Hander's Day and Happy Postcard Friendship Friday!

International Juggling Day - Postcard Friendship Friday # 20

This is another postcard from my "Cyber" collection.  I love the poem and the little girl juggling hearts--though I'm not sure about that black cat.  I'm afraid he might pounce on one of those hearts and carry it away!

Today is International Juggling Day.  If you have ever wanted to learn the art of juggling--today might be the best day to do so.  Juggling is thought to have originated as early as the 15th century in Egypt, where a wall painting was found in an ancient tomb featuring juggling performers.

The word, "juggling" most likely originated from the Medieval word, "jogelen," which meant "to entertain by performing tricks."  Remember the Jester who, according to legend, was kept near the king to keep him entertained and to distract in times of stress?

Apparently International Juggling Day was created to teach people how to juggle.  The person or organization who began celebrating the holiday on July 16, is a mystery.

To honor the holiday, there is an International Juggling Sticks Competition July 16, 17, in Las Vegas, Nevada!  Happy Juggling, Happy Postcard Friendship Friday!

Kewpie Doll and Friends -Postcard Friendship Friday

I love this postcard! It is a part of my cyber card and postcard collection. I love black cats. This little girl reminds me of the old Kewpie dolls.

When I was young I did a lot of house sitting for old Mrs. Hood. She lived in a wonderful old two story house, and was one of the first women to settle in our area back in the "olden times." Oh, the stories she would tell. She often gave my sister and I trinkets and odds and ends she thought we would like.

This is a Kewpie Doll she gave to me. This little hand painted doll is probably over 100 years old. She is made of a bisque-like material and her arms move. She is so old she has a crack down one side and a hairline fracture along the back of one arm.

The story I heard is the doll was bought from a peddler wagon which used to come through town. It is probably one of the very first Kewpie dolls ever made. I have never seen another like it in my research.

Happy Postcard Friendship Friday!
