'Tis a Day for Father's in Law! - Postcard Friendship Friday #22

Today we celebrate Father-In-Law Day.  This lovely postcard commemorates the role of this kind and brave fellow, who accepts his son or daughter's spouse into his life and binds them closely to his heart.

No one really knows how this holiday was started, though most believe it to be a recent holiday invented by card companies! 

Father-In-Law Day honors that loving, funny, and cheerful old man. Regardless of his personality and charms (or lack of them), this day is dedicated to a man who certainly deserves recognition. 

There are endless ways to celebrate this day-send him a card, spend a little time with him, or give him his favorite snack. You can send a special letter of gratitude or an e-card to your father-in-law for welcoming you into his family and supporting you through the years. Gifts are a part of the Day. Finding a gift is quite simple; just think of all the activities the old man enjoys, then surprise him by planning a full day together. While the gift will show your appreciation, it's the time spent together that is to be cherished most.

Fawns and Bluebirds

Here is another of Grammie's cards.  She must have loved it so to keep it in her collection--it is all spotted and stained.  I can see why she liked it so much--those little fawns are so sweet.

When Clytie and I were walking in forests surrounding The Abandoned last time around--Sissy actually saw one of these delicate little creatures.  Today's card is in honor of that magical moment.

National Hot Dog Day is In the Pink - Postcard Friendship Friday # 21

July 23rd is National Hot Dog Day in America!  I chose this postcard because hot dogs and baseball go together, er, hand and glove. 

No one knows how this holiday got started, but perhaps we celebrate this day because Hot dogs are an American tradition.  Hot Dogs are roasted on the grill and at picnics all across the country. They are at the ballpark. They are sold from carts on street corners in every city. They are toasted on sticks over back yard barbecue pits and over woodland camp fires.  It's not hard to find them.

Each year Americans buy over 837 packages of hot dogs and at baseball stadiums 24 million hot dogs are consumed.  They are delicious!  So what's in a Hot dog?  Don't ask--sometimes it's best if you don't know!

Happiness Is...

This is a card I received from my Best Friend in High School.  His name was Eric and I loved  him.  Our paths grew apart and I have not seen him for many years.  He was one of those special people who inspired me to greater things--thank you, Buddy. 

This card somehow catches the essence of the 1970's for me.  This is the way it was back then.

Rings on Her Fingers, Bells on Her Toes - Pink Saturday

Of course, she isn't a princess at all--things are not as they seem.  She is a poor girl of good character who's reward brought her to the attention of the ruler of the Kingdom.  Of course, there will be pain and tears, but in the end, they will live happily ever after!

International Juggling Day - Postcard Friendship Friday # 20

This is another postcard from my "Cyber" collection.  I love the poem and the little girl juggling hearts--though I'm not sure about that black cat.  I'm afraid he might pounce on one of those hearts and carry it away!

Today is International Juggling Day.  If you have ever wanted to learn the art of juggling--today might be the best day to do so.  Juggling is thought to have originated as early as the 15th century in Egypt, where a wall painting was found in an ancient tomb featuring juggling performers.

The word, "juggling" most likely originated from the Medieval word, "jogelen," which meant "to entertain by performing tricks."  Remember the Jester who, according to legend, was kept near the king to keep him entertained and to distract in times of stress?

Apparently International Juggling Day was created to teach people how to juggle.  The person or organization who began celebrating the holiday on July 16, is a mystery.

To honor the holiday, there is an International Juggling Sticks Competition July 16, 17, in Las Vegas, Nevada!  Happy Juggling, Happy Postcard Friendship Friday!

I shan't Stir - Guest Heart Thursday

This is one of my oldest Valentine Cards--since it is Guest Heart Thursday--I could not resist putting up another card from my collection.  There is a little metal rivet in the cup, which allows the bear and spoon to move back and forth.  Isn't that just the cutest thing?!

I 'Karo' Lot for You

Though Valentine's Day is still a LONG ways away, I thought today would be a good day to share another Valentine card from my collection.

This one really hit my funnybone.  I happen to love Karo Syrup--as does this handsome little boy--and that spunky pup begging at his knee.  I like the dog's pink ribbon along with the boy's green sox and shoes. 

This card was printed in the United States, probably around the 1930's--when young boys were still required to wear those, er, rather girlish shoes!

The Woman and the Chicken - Pink Saturday

This postcard is another from my "cyber" collection.  I think it is probably meant for Easter, but with those lovely frills and pink flower accents I thought it perfect for Pink Saturday.

That Rooster has a wonderfully aggressive stance.  From the look on the girl's face, I would say she's hoping that bird won't peck her!

Collector Car Appreciation Day - Postcard Friendship Friday # 19

This year, the U.S. Senate  passed a resolution naming July 9 as the first Collector Car Appreciation Day.

SEMA  (Specialty Equipment Market Association) lobbyists were behind the effort, hoping for a grassroots groundswell to propel the day forward. SEMA will be listing Collector Car Appreciation Day events in cities and towns around the U.S, with the idea July 9 will take on the weight and importance of such holidays as Mother's Day and Thanksgiving.

Politicians have set aside July 9, to recognize "that the collection and restoration of historic and classic cars is an important part of preserving the technological achievements and cultural heritage of the United States."

Anita Lienert, Correspondent for Inside Line says, "Guess all you really need are a couple of classic cars, a parking lot and some lawn chairs to get this thing off the ground in your neighborhood."

American Homestead Summer

There are four of these postcards, one for each season.  I have chosen American Homestead Summer to post today.  It is to be the hottest day of summer so far, here in rainy, cool Oregon.

As I sit in my office, in a room once used as a parlor, I think about the woman who lived here over 100 years ago--she rolled her bread out on the piece of green marble I use for a desk top.  I wonder what she might have thought of my world.

Smell the Flowers - Pink Saturday

I found this wonderful postcard at Tattered Gold.  There's something about the way the flowers are layered across the picture and the rapt way she is enjoying the scent of that bloom which captures my eyes.

The Making of the Flag - Postcard Friendship Friday #18

Have you ever wondered who actually designed the first American Flag?

In 1870, Betsy Ross's daughter, Rachel Fletcher showed her Mother a drawing from a brainstorming session by the Flag Committee.  She had some critiques...she felt the flag should be one third longer than its width, that the stars should be either in lines or in a circle, or a star.  The stars were six-pointed in the drawing and she believed they should be five-pointed.  So Rachel was the designer of the first American Flag--Betsy sewed it into existence.

It is interesting to note it was usual in that day for upholsterers to be flag makers. Betsy Ross attended the same church as George Washington and prayed in the pew next to him.  She had sewn buttons for him in the past and was a niece of George Ross.  So it is not exceptional the members of the Flag Committee formed by the Continental Congress would call upon Betsy Ross to make the flag.

There is a LOT more history behind the making of the American Flag--suffice it to say, Betsy Ross was an extraordinary woman, as was her daughter Rachel!  Happy Fourth of July!
