One Flag, One Land -Postcard Friendship Friday #381

Today is Veteran's Day in the United States.  The soldiers in this vintage postcard have various uniforms, which I believe represent different eras of time.

My Family has records of young men fighting for what they believe in, clear down through the Civil War, and before that.  It is an honor to know about these brave soldiers.

Please take time to honor those who have fought for your liberty and freedom today.  Blessings to everyone and Happy Postcard Friendship Friday.

Thank you for Your Service -Postcard Friendship Friday #332

My sister Clytie has done a lot of study in the genealogy of our family.  She has discovered through both sides of our family, every generation of our family has fought for our freedom in one way or another.  Their stories of loyalty, honesty and integrity touches my heart.  Recently at a family reunion, I saw first-hand the helmet and uniform of one of our relatives who fought in WW1.  It was a poignant moment.

Today in America, we honor our brave Veterans.  I remember my Dad thoughtfully telling me that the one thing which kept him going through those months as a prisoner of war in Nazi Germany, was the knowledge he fought for family, country and flag--and for Freedom.  He could not stand the thought of anyone being oppressed and fought for the freedom of others as well.

God bless all of our veterans--those brave men and women who have sacrificed so much for their country, family and freedom.

Honor the Brave

Today is our family's first Veteran's Day without  Dad.  Dad once told me there was a fine line between cowardice and bravery.  He said he only did what he had to do and anyone in his place would have done the same.  The words of a courageous man.  Daddy was a brave man and today I honor him for the sacrifices he made.

Then I think of soldiers, not only from America, but from all over the world who fought for country, home and family.  Sometimes my heart is sad to think are there those who do not understand the significance of the sacrifices made by those who've fought on our behalf.

God bless the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.  God bless their families.

As I see all the flags placed along the streets and flying overhead--my heart breaks just a little.  I miss you, Daddy--My Hero.

Veterans Day - Postcard Friendship Friday #89

I love this postcard.  It reminds me of how much our boys must miss home and family as they serve overseas.   Dad often spoke of how much he missed his family and country the years he fought in World War Two.
 
The history of Veteran's Day in America is an interesting one.  After World War One, on November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first Commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…"

This holiday was celebrated with a day off with parades and honoring our war-torn warriors.

In 1968, a law was signed in order to insure three-day weekends for Federal employees by celebrating four national holidays on Mondays: Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Columbus Day. It was thought that these extended weekends would encourage travel, recreational and cultural activities and stimulate greater industrial and commercial production. Many states did not agree with this decision and continued to celebrate the holidays on their original dates.

The first official Veterans Day under the new law was observed with much confusion on October 25, 1971. It was quite apparent that the commemoration of this day was a matter of historic and patriotic significance to a great number of our citizens, and so on September 20th, 1975, President Gerald R. Ford signed a law returning the annual observance of Veterans Day to its original date of November 11, beginning in 1978.

On this day in America, we honor our veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.  So many of my family have served in the military--some continue to this day.  I thank each of them for their service and sacrifice.  I am grateful to every man and woman who have stood--and continue to stand--in the gap for freedom, country, family and home.

Thanskgiving - Postcard Friendship Friday #37

It is November, the month in which Americans celebrate Thanksgiving.  But on November 12, we also honor veterans on Veteran's Day--thanking them for their service to our country.

Today I am thankful for my Grandfather who served in WW1, for Dad who was captured by Nazi's in WW2, for Uncle Joe who served in Vietnam, for Uncle Kelly who served in Korea, for my brother in law Guy who served in Desert Storm, and for my nephew David who serves our country today.  But I am thankful--not just for these who are precious to me, but to the thousands of men and women across the world--from many countries--who sacrifice daily to keep the world safe.

Honor the Brave

Today is Veteran's Day in America. A day when we honor all those dead and living for their sacrifice. I am moved to tears when I see the legend over the entrance to the Veteran's Hospital. "The Price of Freedom is Seen Here."

The lobby of the hospital is filled with brave men and women of all ages, from all walks of life. Some of these old soldiers had no choice in fighting--they were drafted and had to be brave. Others faced the enemy by choice. All are heros in my eyes.

Thank you Grandpa--you served in WW1. Thank you Daddy--you fought in the Battle of the bulge and were imprisoned in Stalag B and Bad Orb during WW2. Thank you Uncle Kelly--you went to war in Korea. Thank you Uncle Jody--you faced the enemy in Vietnam. Thank you Guy--you were at the frontlines of the first Iraq war. Thank you, young nephew David, you are protecting our country today.

Thank you to all the soldiers who fought and sacrificed their strength and youth and to all of you who continue to serve. YOU are my heros.
