A Token of Love -Postcard Friendship Friday #515

A Token of Love
Two souls with but a single thought,
Two hearts that beat as one,
Will make our home an ideal spot.
And from dull care we'll run...

Summertime romance...  There's a certain music in the air when summer touches and dispels the cold damp winter, then cool Spring.

Have a great weekend!  Happy Postcard Friendship Friday!

Wedding upon the Crow's nest

Today my husband and I would have been married 37 years.  He has been gone nearly six years now and I still miss him.

I remember when I was walking down the aisle...  So much of life ahead--so much unknown.  It felt a little like that thrilling kiss atop the crows nest in this extraordinary vintage postcard!

Have a beautiful day--don't forget to do something sweet for the ones you love.  Life is short and can change in an instant.

Blessing and hope to you!

A Kiss and a Rainbow -Postcard Friendship Friday #503

I love this old postcard--such a sweet innocence about it.  I often saw rainbows when I kissed my Beloved.  Covid-19 still has the world in lock down.  Or, as they call it here in the US, the "stay in place," order.  I will be glad when this pandemic ceases.

Have a beautiful joyous weekend and Happy Postcard Friendship Friday!

Caught at Last -Postcard Friendship Friday #500

This is an interesting old postcard.  I wonder who'd been caught--the woman or all those interested fellows?  What do you think?

Romance often blooms in Spring.  Springtime has finally arrived.  We are still in lock down, but even so, Spring is still beautiful!

Have a lovely weekend, Friends and Happy Postcard Friendship Friday!

Halloween Romance -Postcard Friendship Friday #477

Halloween has a long history of celebration across the entire world.  This lovely postcard has a theme from The Netherlands.  I love the background of windmills, and the wonderful traditional garb.  I hope this delightful postcard will bring a smile to your face too!

Have a great weekend!   Thank you for dropping by. Happy Halloween and Happy Postcard Friendship Friday.

A Modern Siren

Even in the age when swimsuits were not as small as they are today--this young woman is lovely.  I like the sleeves on that vintage suit--and there's no denying the young man finds her attractive.

Summer days are here!  I'm blessed in that from where I live, I'm an hour from the desert, the mountains, the forests and the ocean--it just depends upon which direction I decide to take!

Have a lovely week everyone!

A Greeting From St. Valentine -Postcard Friendship Friday #393

This graceful vintage postcard with its exquisite roses pleases my eyes.  The style of clothing from the past is charming--but I can't imagine wearing such things these days--it would be SO hard to function in such long skirts.  However, I do love the way the ladies looked then.

I hope you are having a lovely day.  Have a great weekend and Happy Postcard Friendship Friday!

Over the Moon -Postcard Friendship Friday #369

People all over the world are excited over the Great American Eclipse.  It will happen Monday, August 21.  Next weekend upwards of 500,000 people from all over the world will pour into our area.  Our little town is one of those places where the eclipse can be seen in totality.

The actual eclipse will last all of two minutes, though the waxing and waning of the eclipse lasts much longer than that.  It is said this event won't happen again in my lifetime.  I am grateful that I live in the direct path of this amazing event!

In honor of America's epic Eclipse, I will be posting vintage postcards having to do with the moon.  This beautifully romantic postcard is one of my favorites!  Oh, how I wish my Beloved were here to see the Eclipse!  He would have loved all the fanfare and would have been in the thick of it.

Happy Postcard Friendship Friday and have a GREAT weekend!

Summer Romance -Postcard Friendship Friday #368

I am sorry for not posting last week.  I was hosting a drama camp in my home for a group of little girls.  We had SUCH a great time!  I was totally distracted by all that had to be done beforehand.

I adore this postcard.  The old costumes and the sweetness of love and daisies.  Summertime sweethearts.  I miss my Beloved, walking hand in hand at the park... His funny stories, his laughter--the way he saw life.

Don't take your family for granted.  Life is fragile.  Enjoy every moment.  I hope you have a GREAT weekend, dear friends!

The Lady and the Sheik -Postcard Friendship Friday #348

Back in the 1930's there were many films made about romance in the far East. This is a photo from one of those wonderful old movies. Their pose, the kiss trembling between them--well, it looks VERY romantic. (grin)

However looks are probably deceiving. Most likely these dancers are feeling quite uncomfortable! Cameras from that long-ago era took forever to take a picture.  The folks posing for a picture had to hold the stance without moving, for quite some time. How they held their smile and that sense of romance I cannot imagine!

Have a lovely day, dear Friends.  Happy Postcard Friendship Friday!

Print a Kiss -Postcard Friendship Friday #347

It is good to be back home!  I hope this entry finds you all happy and singing songs.  Since it is still the month of Valentines, I'm posting this lovely postcard featuring vintage Romance.  Some things never change!

I miss my the love of my life and his kisses--Valentine's Day was special to us both, so it is a bittersweet holiday these days.  However, even though my Beloved is in heaven, I still love Valentine's Day.

Have a lovely weekend, dear Friends.  And Happy Postcard Friendship Friday!

The Story of the American Flag -Postcard Friendship Friday #315

I apologize for posting this so late.  I have been out of town and so busy I didn't have much time to be on the computer.  Yesterday was poignant as Mumsie, Sissie and I visited Daddy's memorial at the Willamette Veteran's Cemetery.  There is a powerful bond between the people who visit there.  Last year we met Andrea, who's Dad, Mike is just above Daddy.  Of all things, we saw her and met her husband this year--we were there at the same time, of all things!

Isn't this a fun postcard?  Smooching behind the flag--ah, young love.

But the story behind Decoration Day is more serious.  Decoration Day started in 1866 after the American Civil War, when a Women's Association decorated the graves of both Union and Confederate soldiers. For a nation seeking to move on after a war which split the country, states, communities and even families, this loving gesture was welcomed as a way to lay the past to rest, while honoring those who had fought on either side.  This brought unity and healing to a war-torn, war-worn country.

Later on, Decoration Day became known as Memorial Day.

On May 30, 1870, General Logan gave an address in honor of the new commemorative holiday. He said:

"This Memorial Day, on which we decorate their graves with the tokens of love and affection, is no idle ceremony with us, to pass away an hour; but it brings back to our minds in all their vividness the fearful conflicts of that terrible war in which they fell as victims....
Let us, then, all unite in the solemn feelings of the hour, and tender with our flowers the warmest sympathies of our souls! Let us revive our patriotism and love of country by this act, and strengthen our loyalty by the example of the noble dead around us...."

It is only recently my sister Clytie discovered an interesting story in our own family line.  There were two brothers, one fought for the Union, the other for the Confederacy.  Each were imprisoned in the opposite side's prison camp at the same time.  Strange.  I am SO grateful to the Women who set out to bring healing to our torn country so long ago.  I am sure that healing extended to those two young men.

Our Grandfather fought in WW1, Daddy fought in WW2, Uncle Jody fought in Vietnam, Uncle Kelly fought in Korea, my brother-in-law fought in Iraq, my nephew was in the armed forces until just recently.  I am grateful to the sacrifices which were made by SO many men and women over the years.  We owe our freedom and way of life to them. they are my heros.

God bless you, sweet Friends, and Happy Postcard Friendship Friday!

Marry Me -Postcard Friendship Friday #311

Tomorrow my sweet young friends Nathan and Jennika will be joining their lives in marriage.  I am so happy for these dear ones.  Nathan was loved and mentored by my sweet Alan, and has been like a son to me since my husband passed away.

Above you see a drawing I made for them as their wedding gift! Jennika is perfect for Nathan.  I am SO happy for them!  This postcard is dedicated to this sweet couple and to honor the wonderful adventure ahead of them.

Have a lovely day, dear Friends, and Happy Postcard Friendship Friday!

From Your Valentine - Postcard Friendship Friday #300

I have always loved Valentines Day.  When I was a young girl, every person in my classroom at school would make a red heart pouch to hang on the end of each desk.  All of the children would bring cards for everyone in class.  I could hardly wait to open all the wonderful cards I received.  I saved many of them--in fact they are a part of my extensive Valentine Ephemera collection.

I adore this Valentine's Day postcard--the little girl's dress is so pretty--and wouldn't I love to see a violet that size!  I thought it perfect for the holiday!

There is a fascinating Valentine's Day legend from long ago.  When the Roman empire became too large, more and more men were recruited as solders and officers--pressed into service to protect Rome's vast lands.  When Claudius became emperor he brought some interesting ideas to the throne.

Emperor Claudius II believed married men were too emotionally attached to their families.  He thought a man with a wife and family, would not make a good soldier.  He believed marriage, with it's strong emotional ties, made men weak. So he issued an edict forbidding soldiers to marry.

The ban on marriage was a great shock for the Romans, who's tradition of marriage was a huge part of their society.  But the Roman people dared not voice their protest against the mighty emperor.

At that time, there lived a kindly clergyman by the name of Valentine who was known for his powers of healing.  This brave man realized the injustice of the decree. He saw first-hand the grief of young lovers who had given up all hopes of being united in marriage.  So, Valentine countered the unpopular edict by meeting young lovers to perform marriage ceremonies in secret.

But such things cannot remain hidden for long. It was only a matter of time before the Emperor heard about Saint Valentine, the "friend of lovers."   The Emperor promptly had him arrested for his crimes.

When Emperor Claudius visited Valentine, it is said the great ruler was impressed by Valentine's dignity and conviction.  However, when the Emperor asked this good man to reverse his feelings about the ban on marriage--Valentine refused to change his views, even attempting to share his own Faith with the Roman leader.  As a result, the now thoroughly furious Emperor gave the order to execute Valentine.

During his imprisonment, Valentine's guard, Asterius asked him to heal his daughter of her blindness.  Valentine prayed over the girl and she regained her sight.  According to this charming, yet sad legend, Valentine fell deeply in love with Asterius' daughter.  It is said just before his execution, he asked for a pen and paper to sign a farewell message to the young girl.  He signed his letter with, From Your Valentine, a phrase which lovers use to this very day.

Martyred for love and for his Faith, Valentine is believed to have been executed on February 14, 270 AD.

This brave man left behind a beautiful legacy.  Treasure the ones you love this Valentine's Day.  It is a wonderful day to share how much you love those who are close to your heart.

Happy Postcard Friendship Friday!

My Fair Lady Rose -Postcard Friendship Friday #240

I apologize for the lateness of this post. We had a chimney fire some time back.  Repairs are finally underway.  The chimney is gone now and the noise of the work they've been doing is deafening!  I don't mind--it is the sound of progress.  I hope you will still join us today--even though I'm a bit late in posting.

It has been so warm in our part of the world, the roses are still in full bloom.  This lovely Lady Rose seemed a perfect tribute to today's beautiful sunshine and balmy temperatures.

The past five years or so, the rain started mid-September and didn't stop until late Spring.  Grandpa used to call bright and warm October weather an "Indian  Summer."  I loved his quaint phrases--things such as calling an ice storm, a "silver thaw."

If you are here in the Pacific Northwest, enjoy the sun whilst you can and Happy Postcard Friendship Friday!
