Dancing on the Green -Postcard Friendship Friday #303

Isn't she lovely?  I hear Irish music and I cannot keep my feet from dancing.  When I was a little girl I would dance for hours, with all the exuberance of the young--a foot fancy step.  To this day I can still do it--It turns out the dance I have always done, is a traditional Irish Dance.

Have a lovely day, dear ones--I am sorry about the lateness of this post.  This past weekend has been a difficult one for me.  The grief of losing the love of my life crashed over me--and alas, I was a bit lost for a time.  Thank you for your patience.

God bless you all.  Happy Postcard Friendship Friday.

Erin Mavourneen! -Postcard Friendship Friday #302

This is one of the most lovely postcards I have seen for St. Patrick's Day.   The beautiful harpist with her flowing hair, blue dress and shaggy companion seem unusual.  I was quite intrigued by the little poem--I am sure it must be a song.

Thy harp-striking bards
Sing aloud with emotion
Erin Mavoureen
Sweet Erin Go Bragh!

In the old Irish, the word movoureen is the possessive version of the word avourneen which means “darling.”  That means Movoureen would mean “My” darling.  The original Irish was a mhuirnīn, a diminutive of mūirn, which had the idea of affection and joy, or, the one for whom I have affection and who gives me joy.  Since Erin comes from Eirinn, the Irish word for Ireland, the phrase Erin Movoureen could likely mean "my darling Ireland, which gives me joy."

That would likely mean the last two phrases of this poem would mean, "Darling Ireland, sweet Ireland live forever!"  Isn't that neat?

Happy Postcard Friendship Friday, dear Friends.

Happy Birthday! -Postcard Friendship Friday #269

It is my birthday on the 14th.  I know I'm a bit early, but happy birthday to me and all those wonderful folks with birthdays in June!  lol

I love the way these two girls are walking together along that giant four leaf clover! Do you suppose they are walking?  Or floating?

This old postcard reminds me of beautiful memories.  What wonderful friends I have.  What a beautiful family has been given to me.  I have so much for which to be thankful.

The weather where I live is beautiful.  I can't remember the last time it was 90 degrees on my birthday.  It usually rains in June.

Have a beautiful weekend, dear Friends. Thank you for dropping by, and Happy Postcard Friendship Friday, too!

A Wee Leprechaun -Postcard Friendship Friday #259

What a funny little fellow--He's exactly as I think a wee Leprechaun might look. One hears stories about the frolicksome ways of the Irish. I love the Irish and am proud to claim my ancestry. Aye, someday I shall visit Ireland and see it all for meself.

This postcard is one I bought for my collection in the late 1970's. It was printed in the USA, and was a reproduction of a postcard printed in the early 1900's.

Have a lovely weekend, dear Friends--and Happy Postcard Friendship Friday.

Cherubs, Fairies and Four Leaf Clovers -Guest Heart Thursday

I know Valentine's Day is past, but I just HAD to share this postcard!  Though it says "to my Valentine," it rather seems to be a combination of Valentine's Day and St. Patrick's Day, along with a smidgen of fairyland--just perfect for today's Guest Heart Thursday.  As you can see--the clover leaves are shaped like hearts!

New Year's Greetings -Guest Heart Thursday

I looked and looked for another New Year's Day postcard with a heart--I finally found this one.  It is a wonderful vintage postcard from the early 1900's.  But something about that snowman hit my funny bone.   The winter scene is idyllic, but that snowman seems to be lurking lurking--and from the look on his face he's up to no good.  I have a feeling he wants to whack 'em good with that four leaf clover!!! At any rate, they'd have a great snowball fight.

Happy New  Year everyone.

Angelic Heart Cello -Guest Heart Thursday

I love music--in particular I adore the sound of the cello.  I have loved classical music since I was a little girl.  I liked making up stories to the music mom played over the radio in our kitchen--only back then, I called it Orchestra Music.  I had no idea it was called classical music until I was much older.

I remember Mom and I were acting out a fairytale to the music we heard one long-ago morning.  It was so perfect, we were sure it was a ballet describing Snow White, or Sleeping Beauty.  How we laughed when the announcer said the title of the music was "The Humped Back Horse."  Ah, those are wonderful memories.  I must have been only five or six years old at the time.

Have a lovely day, everyone!

Basket of Hearts - Guest Heart Thursday

I am one of those who believe we should celebrate Valentine's Day every day of the year.  And I especially enjoy the rich color and whimsical nature of many vintage Valentine's Day Cards.  This one is especially delightful.  I adore the idea of combining hearts with four leafed clovers.   I am also reasonably sure this cute little fellow would be more than happy to share his basket of hearts.
