Ironing the heart - Guest Heart Thursday

I love this postcard--I'm not sure why these two cherubs feel the need to iron the heart--but perhaps it is made of felt and needs to be straightened out?  And that iron is so BIG!  lol  I just love the detail in this wonderful old postcard!

This postcard was part of my cyber collection.  I found it at Christine's fabulous blog featuring her amazing postcard collection.  You can see more of her wonderful collection at The Daily Postcard.

Oh yes. This is one of my favorite 'heart' cards of all time! I love it! I'm not sure why they are ironing the heart ... it gets my imagination all stretchy just thinking about it!

Thank you so much for sharing this amazing card on Guest Heart Thursday. I really do love it!

I loved this one too, which is why I posted it last year. I have to say that I am very hurt and disappointed that you would take things from my site once again without credit or permission.

Hi, Christine, I did not realize I'd found it on your blog, you said you'd posted it a year ago? I do have an extensive cyber postcard collection and do not always think to write down where they come from.

Please accept my apology and note the reference to your blog on this entry.

I remember long ago you did write to me about a postcard that apparently came from your blog. I recall I immediately put in a link and reference to your blog.

I read with interest the conflict Christine H has aroused regarding use of images she originally posted on her blog. Yes, it is a courtesy to ask permission to use an image found on someone's blog, and looking back I've noticed Beth has done extremely well in this department. Not a one of us, however, is perfect. What puzzles me is Christine's over-reaction.

To note: It is perfectly legal under copyright laws to copy and use an image that is public domain. The statement "All rights reserved" refers to protection under copyright laws, which clearly states "The copyright in a work of authorship immediately becomes the property of the author who created it at the moment it is put into fixed form. No one but the author can claim copyright to the work."

Yes, it is indeed correct and courteous to link back to a web site that FIRST posted a work, but Christine's reaction to the use of this image as being THEFT ("take things from my site without credit or permission") ... is a bit much. Especially since this is clearly not her own original artwork, nor is it indicated anywhere on her page that she legally owns copyright to this piece.

So ... in the future, Beth, if you don't remember where an image came from, it might be best to post it with a statement of "if I got this from your site, please let me know". As it is, I am awed by your sweet response to this accusation.

And Christine, if you don't want to be "hurt and disappointed", I would suggest you either don't post public domain images, or choose such a manner of posting that doesn't allow copying. At the very least, try a little grace and courtesy in your own responses.

I love your happy little card - especially since it brings back some of the many good memories of your dear brother!

I get all of my postcard images from www.cardcow.com. Just sent the owner a request to use them and he gave me blanket permission.

Loved your very sweet response to an over-reaction.

I don't want to spend a lot of time on this, but I have two quick responses to Clytie's comments.

First of all, I'm not sure why it's necessary to attack someone who says she hurt or offended that something from her blog has been re-used without credit or permission.

Secondly, what's the point of going to the trouble of buying postcards, scanning them, researching them and then posting them if someone just turns around and posts it as their own? Can't we all come up with our own material?

As for the copyright law, you need to do more research. If you have an item such as a postcard that is in the public domain, the scan you make of the item in your possession is your property and can be copyrighted. You could also print new greeting cards, posters etc. with these images and that copyright would be yours.

Mostly though, this has to do with courtesy not law.

Christine, I had forgotten where I had found this postcard. I have no problem crediting contributing websites. No discourtesy was ever meant toward you.

I understand your frustration, when you have spent money to buy vintage items, then take the time to scan and post these beautiful items onto your blog.

But to assume a person has taken something from your site deliberately, is also hurtful. I was horrified and embarrassed by your comment. I would never knowingly "steal" from another person's blog.

I am an artist and am well aware of copyright law. It is true a person can copyright public domain cards and postcards, but ONLY if they are altered in some fashion. I have been to many a website where this has been explained in detail. And I respect that.

To avoid anything like this ever happening again, I have placed a prominent statement in my sidebar.

Clytie, I am deeply grateful for your defense of me. ((hugs))

Oh, Beth.. You have been such an inspiration to us all. Your Christian faith has held you steadfast in the midst of any pains you have endured. It still stands.
Your blog has been a continuous reminder of what love, sharing and caring is all about.
Any person who can claim rights to something they did not create is of vast ignorance.
Not meaning this in (malicous)sense but of literal context. Beth has offered for me to take her art even most recently and "paint" it to see what I come up with.
As true artists living Christian lives, this is what it is all about. Sharing and being happy in whom we are. Please do not worry about this.
How can someone hold you accountable for something you have not done?
You did nothing wrong.

Beth, you have been a momentous gracious person. We love you and our prayers go up for you and Christine for understanding of this issue which should have never happened.
Hugs, Darlene xo
Where's old Lincoln when you need him? lol!!

You are very kind. I hope I have responded in a way which doesn't hurt anyone. I hope this will all pass over. I really did not mean any harm to Christine.

I hope there are no hard feelings.

Thank you so much for your kind comments, Darlene--by the way your latest art piece is absolutely beautiful!
