My Country Tis of Thee -Postcard Friendship Friday #514

My Country ‘Tis of Thee is a patriotic hymn written in 1832,by Samuel F. Smith.  At the time he was a student at Andover Theological Seminary in Andover, Massachusetts.

Shockingly, the melody traveled around Europe in several variations, including “God Save the King.” Even Beethoven and Haydn used the music in some of their own compositions.

Samuel Smith loved America and he was driven to create a national hymn for the United States. One rainy day, he wrote the this anthem--it only took him 30 minutes! The first three verses encourage and invoke national pride, while the last verse was specifically reserved as a petition to God for His continued favor and protection of the United States of America.

The following are Samuel Smith’s original lyrics for “My Country ‘Tis of Thee”:
My country, 'tis of thee, Sweet land of liberty, Of thee I sing; Land where my fathers died, Land of the pilgrims' pride, From every mountainside Let freedom ring! My native country, thee, Land of the noble free, Thy name I love; I love thy rocks and rills, Thy woods and templed hills; My heart with rapture thrills, Like that above. Let music swell the breeze, And ring from all the trees Sweet freedom's song; Let mortal tongues awake; Let all that breathe partake; Let rocks their silence break, The sound prolong. Our fathers' God to Thee, Author of liberty, To Thee we sing. Long may our land be bright, With freedom's holy light, Protect us by Thy might, Great God our King.
This wonderful old hymn was first performed on July 4, 1832 at the Park Street Church in Boston, Massachusetts. Remarkably.  Five hundred Sunday school children sang the piece at a memorable Independence Day celebration.

Samuel F. Smith became a Baptist minister.  He was also a noted author, and journalist. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1801. He was later a student at Harvard and served as a translator for various foreign languages. He received his theological training at Andover Theological Seminary starting in 1830. He later married Mary White Smith and they had six children.

In addition to writing My Country 'Tis of Thee, Smith wrote over 150 other hymns. These hymns were compiled into a Baptist hymnal, The Psalmist.

Smith died on November 16, 1895.  I wish I could have met this talented man.

Beautiful America -Postcard Friendship Friday #513

This Fourth of July will be like no other I've ever experienced.  Because of Covid-19, Oregon's governor has shut down all celebratory events.  There will be no parade, no live music in our waterfront amphitheater, no running marathon, no grand fireworks over the river.  Our town usually celebrates with gusto--not so this year.

I have the blessing of the company of my precious Mumsie--and we will be going to my sister's home for dinner, games and homemade fireworks.  I am looking forward to it!

I love America.  She is beautiful and I am greatly blessed to live here.

Happy Postcard Friendship Friday!

Uncle Sam is a Blast! -Postcard Friendship Friday #462

This postcard is so colorful and perfect for American's Fourth of July celebration.  However, I still can't help shuddering a little when I see how close the firecracker is to that boy's face as he lights it!  Vintage postcards sometimes have the most unlikely images.

In the meantime, next Thursday, here in the USA, we celebrate the Fourth of July.  I'm looking forward to friends and family arriving and the fun and fellowship we will share.

I am grateful for the freedom we have in America.  God bless America!  Happy celebrations, and Happy Postcard Friendship Friday!

Freedom's Flag -Postcard Friendship Friday #460

Today is Flag Day and this coming Sunday is Father's Day.  Dad will always be my hero.

I love our country's flag.  My Father fought beneath it and for it during WW2.  He spoke of how that flag, those stars and stripes, symbolized his country and family--those things he loved best.  In the midst of blood and battle, when he saw our American Flag he took courage.

Dad is in heaven now--but I still remember the look in his eyes when he spoke of how our flag gave him courage to face the terrible things of war.

Happy Flag Day, Daddy.  I love you.

American Hearts -Guest Heart Thursday

This does not have hearts in the picture--but it does have the word hearts!  I enjoyed the stunning borders of this postcard, and those children are adorable.  It appears the boy is a budding dress designer, eh?  He seems to be making the flag into a gown for the girl.

Happy Guest Heart Thursday, and Happy Fourth of July!

Our Country Forever - Postcard Friendship Friday #70

NOTE: You don't have to stick to the theme I choose each Friday. Just put up the postcards you love and tell us why you like them! Have fun everyone!

Living in the United States, it is sometimes hard to fathom there are people who live in places where they are not allowed the freedoms to which I am accustomed.    Where I live, we celebrate our rare Freedom with a parade, waterfront park activities such as live music and two nights of fireworks.  Once known as Decoration Day, the Fourth of July is a major American Holiday.

This week our town's newspaper printed the Declaration of Independence, which took up one whole page.  I read through the entire thing.  I haven't read it through since I was in school.  What an incredible document.

The Declaration of Independence is a justification of the American Revolution, citing grievances against King George III.   It is also a landmark philosophical statement, drawing on the writings of philosophers John Locke and Jean Jacques Rousseau.   It affirms all people are creatures of God, with certain natural rights, or liberties, which cannot be violated.

This Declaration and the American Revolution have since inspired freedom-seekers the around the world. I am so grateful to have been born in America, where the rights of all citizens are upheld.

I hope we never take our freedom for granted.
