I have always loved black cats. It is unfortunate they get so much bad press here in America. Their reputation is not so bad in other places. In Scotland, a strange black cat on a porch is said to bring prosperity to the owner. In other lore, if a white hair is found on a black cat, it is considered to be good luck, but woe to the one who plucks it out! In Asia and the UK, the black cat carries good tidings, and to dream of a black cat foretells good fortune.
My family's history with black cats started with my Dad, who as a boy companied with a cat named Snow. When I was a little girl, we had a little black cat, with a swatch of white under her chin--who's name was Snow. When my children were young we miraculously rescued a tiny black kitten from between the walls of the old Carriage House. She was named Snow, too. You can read about the daring rescue of our dear Snow "Bunny" in Angel Stories.

That time of year again already! We've been noticing a definite coolness at night.
ReplyDeleteLove the card. I had a black cat named Magic. He lived to be 21 years old. Amazing little guy! Happy to be posting Halloween cards again! Yippee!
ReplyDeleteIn the Philippines, a black cat brings bad omen... usually death. The same here in Cambodia.

I had a black cat that was with me for seventeen years. She was that 'once in a lifetime animal' (the one you never get over losing). She was extremely intelligent.
ReplyDeleteI have another one now, and he's turned out to be very smart as well.
It's funny how different areas view the black cat. In Great Britain black cats are considered good luck, and the Scots believe that a black cat's arriving at a home signifies prosperity. Western history is where the evil omen superstitions come in. Kind of interesting.
I find it sad that so many people still consider black cats bad luck. There are so many in shelters needing good homes (as there are black dogs - labs especially).
Love the postcard. I've always been partial to that particular Halloween card. :-)
I love the card!
ReplyDeleteA black cat that crosses in front of you means bad luck here in the Philippines.
Sreisaat was right. Black cats are believed to be connected to bad luck here in the Philippines.
ReplyDeleteIt's like most Catholic would say 'Jesus Christ' and make a sign of the cross when they see one.
