Farewell Precious Brother and Friend -Postcard Friendship Friday #397

Hello, dear Friends.  Today I lost my brother and my Friend.  Dan Becker was not only my husband's best Friend, he was one of my greatest encouragers after Alan passed away.

Yesterday our Dan had open heart surgery to repair a valve.  This morning the surgeon had to go in again to stop a leak which was pressing his heart...then again a second time--and Dan didn't make it.  We are all devastated.

Dan was a good, sweet and wise man, who loved his wife Judy, his family and friends.  He has left a great hole in this world.  Though I know he is with my Beloved, and that I will see both of these wonderful men again, I am grieving his loss more than I can say in words.

Just two weeks ago, I had the privilege of playing opposite Dan onstage in a drama I wrote.  How I thank God for that chance to spend time with him learning lines, and serving the Lord together.

Oh the Green Shamrocks -Postcard Friendship Friday #396

I love Ireland and all things Irish.  Green is one of my favorite colors--and this charming postcard by artist Ellen Clapsaddle is one of my favorites.

The man for whom St. Patrick’s Day is named was born into an aristocratic family in Roman Britain around the end of the fourth century. As a teenager, he was kidnapped by Irish pirates and taken to Ireland, where for years he was a slave. Eventually he escaped, only to return later on as a missionary who brought Christianity to the Emerald Isle.  After his death he was named the patron saint of Ireland. 

The celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, which began as a religious holiday, is celebrated March 17 on the Feast of St. Patrick. 

 Irish immigrants who came to America were the first to honor their heritage while embracing their new homeland on this holiday. They held parades, ate wonderful authentic Irish foods, with more than a bit of a party thrown in.  Thanks to Irish folks in the United States and elsewhere, St. Patrick’s Day eventually evolved from a little known religious holiday into a secular celebration of all things Irish. The first St. Patrick’s Day parade was held in New York City in the 1760s.  

However, it wasn't until much later St. Patrick's Day was actually celebrated in Ireland itself.  Thankfully, today it has become a national holiday with schools and government buildings closed.

Because there are some 34.5 million Americans claiming to be primarily, or partially of Irish descent, the wearing of the green on March 17 is still going strong here.  Indeed, I am proud of my Irish heritage—as was my Daddy.

Bedad and Begorra! -Postcard Friendship Friday #395

I love Ireland--someday I hope to visit there.  I am a quarter Irish, from Dad's Side.  His Mom--my Grandmother used to say "Bedad and Begorra."  I never knew what it meant, but I loved to hear her say it--there was always a twinkle in her eye...

From my research, it turns out Bedad was an Irish word coined in the 18th century, which expressed surprise, or emphasis.  The term Begorra was first used in Ireland in 1839, meaning, "By God."  Hurroo seems to have the meaning of goodbye, or good day.

So the translation of this wonderful vintage postcard might be, Surprise and by God!  Good day and good luck to St. Patrick and Good Luck to you.

Hello, sweet Friends...Happy Valentine's Day! Valentine's Day is such a special and dear holiday. I have a wonderful collection of old Postcards and cards I have collected over the years.

It was a fun holiday for my sweet husband and I, too.  My beloved always "surprised" me with a card, candy and a bevy of roses. I miss him--but this year it is bright and cheery outside--and the daffodils are budding.  They will be in full bloom by Wednesday!   I believe my dear heart has sent me a bouquet of flowers for Valentine's Day, along with Springtime sunshine.  It makes me happy to think so!

This graceful vintage postcard with its exquisite roses pleases my eyes.  The style of clothing from the past is charming--but I can't imagine wearing such things these days--it would be SO hard to function in such long skirts.  However, I do love the way the ladies looked then.

Isn't this a charming vintage Valentines Day postcard?  I adore the imaginative artwork which these talented artists of old left behind for us.  I am inspired when I see these sweet old postcards--the color, grace and beauty which some people deem corny, or old fashioned, I find to be refreshing!

It is hard to believe this will be the third Valentine's Day without my Beloved.  Yet I see Alan's touches all over my home and they make me smile.  I do miss him, but Spring is just around the corner bring with it all the hope and beauty of renewed life.

This is a Valentine's Day postcard picturing two sweet friends.  One wonders what secrets they are sharing.  Friends have always been a wonderful part of my life, and I am blessed to be in touch with some of my friends from the earliest days of grade school.

Valentine's Day has been a difficult time for me since my Beloved flew away to heaven.  Yet, one of the greatest gifts as a result that loss are the wonderful women, fellow widows, whom God has brought into my life.

They are sisters of the dearest sort.  I am SO blessed and grateful for each of my sisters.  Especially for Wendy.  This card is dedicated to our sweet sisterhood and the deep friendship we share.

Hello, sweet Friends.  I love this postcard.  It is from my cyber collection and does not have a back I can upload for you.

I sometimes have dreams where I am flying above the trees, winging my way through the air with the birds.  This postcard reminds me of those wonderful moments.  I think that is the way it will be in heaven--I am SURE we will be able to fly just like this.

It is 2018 now--I am looking forward to the adventure ahead--both with anticipation and joy and a little dread.  The uncertainty of our world is a burden upon my heart at times--yet I trust God with the unknown future of this beautiful place He made.
