Though Valentine's Day had been around a LONG time before, it was 498 AD, when Pope Gelasius officially declared February 14th to be St. Valentine's Day.

The oldest known Valentine still in existence today is a poem written by Charles, Duke of Orleans to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London. The greeting, written in 1415, is part of the manuscript collection of the British Library in London, England.

Several years later, it is believed King Henry V actually hired a writer to compose a Valentine note to the lovely Catherine of Valois. He eventually won her heart.

Today Valentine's Day is second only to Christmas in the flood of cards sent through snail mail to friends and loved ones! An admirer of cards and postcards vintage, or otherwise, I am extremely grateful for this sweet tradition.

Thomas Crapper Day - Postcard Friendship Friday #99

I apologize for getting this up so late. Our town of Independence is in the process of being flooded by the Willamette River. I don't believe it will reach our home, but some are saying there's a small possibility it might get into downtown on our waterfront--which is only about four blocks from our place. Over the past few days, our immediate area has seen over eight inches of rain and the precipitation is still falling. Hopefully the internet will remain on long enough for me to post this!

Now, about Mr. Crapper. January 27 is Thomas Crapper Day. Yes, the name is interesting, since he was indeed a plumber--and an inventor! There is a bit of controversy as to whether or not he actually invented the flush toilet. It is said that in the 1900's, or thereabouts, that Seattle had a terrible problem with local, er, powder rooms. Along with the rising tides of the Puget Sound, the commodes of the city would burst pungent waters into the air.

It is rumored Thomas Crapper, a brilliant plummer and inventor, was the man who designed the flushing toilet. Some believe this invention took care of Seattle's, um, problem.

Wikipedia does not agree with the rumor. Mr. Crapper did, however, did much to increase the popularity of the toilet and developed some important related inventions, such as the ballcock. He was noted for the high quality of his products. Indeed, manholes with Crapper's company's name on them in Westminster Abbey are now one of London's minor tourist attractions. It is on record that Thomas Crapper and Company owned the world's first bath, toilet and sink showroom on King's Road until 1966!

I thought you'd like to see a picture of our flooding town! The Willamette should crest by four p.m. Hopefully it won't flood downtown.

This shot is from the street level of our town. The river is usually so far down you would not be able to see it from here.

This is the play structure in the middle of the park. They say the water will be a great deal higher by the time the river crests.

The water is almost half way up the amphitheater area. There is a pile of sand in the library parking lot, where folks are filling sand bags to take home to protect their properties. Entire towns near here and parts of downtown Salem have been evacuated because of flood waters. We have received nearly 10 inches of rain over the past month--most of it over the past several weeks. I would appreciate your prayers for the safety of all the folks affected by the flooding in the Mid-Valley Willamette Valley, here in Oregon.

A Happy New Year! - Postcard Friendship Friday #96

In the United States, the Times Square Ball in New York City is lowered, starting at 11:59 p.m., with a countdown from :10 seconds until :01, when the huge sparkling ball reaches the bottom of its tower. The arrival of the new year is announced at the stroke of midnight with fireworks, music and a live celebration which is broadcast worldwide. In our family celebrations with friends in our home, we often light small fireworks. There is usually a crowd of young people playing games and cracking jokes. You can imagine the noise a group of teenagers and college kids might make--at the stroke of midnight--all armed with my cooking pans and spoons!

In Greece and Cyprus, families and relatives switch the lights off at midnight, then celebrate by cutting the "vassilopita" (Basil's pie) which usually contains one coin or equivalent. Whoever finds the coin is said to have good luck for the entire year.

In the Philippines, along with spectacular fireworks, tables are laden with food for a midnight meal. There is a basket of 12 different round fruits to symbolize prosperity in each of the coming year's 12 months. In Russia and the former republics of the Soviet Union, the celebration of Old New Year is greeted with fireworks and drinking champagne. Families enjoy a lavish dinner tables and an exchange of gifts. In Davos, Switzerland, the final match of the Spengler Cup Ice Hockey Tournament is usually held on this day by tradition.

In France, people pay a lot of attention to the weather that day. This charming tradition regards the weather as the prediction of the coming year: wind blowing east, fruit will yield; wind blowing west, fish and livestock will be bumper; wind blowing south, there will be good weather all year round and wind blowing north, there will be crop failure.
Whatever way you celebrate the new year--it is my prayer 2012 will bring each of you unexpected joy and wonderful prosperity.

Under the Mistletoe - Postcard Friendship Friday #94

I love mistletoe. When I was a youngster, my sister and I cut down a bit of mistletoe from an oak tree. It was two feet across! That ball of mistletoe hung from the back porch ceiling for years. I always put up a bit of mistletoe somewhere in the house at Christmas time. I like to surprise my darling with a kiss!

There are many ancient folk tales revolving around mistletoe. The one I like best is about the Norse goddess Frigga and her son Balder--god of the summer sun.

One night, Balder had a dream which greatly alarmed his mother. He dreamed of his own death. It was said if Balder died, all life on earth would end. To keep this from happening, Frigga went at once to air, fire, water, earth, and every animal and plant seeking a promise that no harm would come to her beloved son. Balder could not be hurt by anything on earth, or under the earth.

But Balder had one enemy, Loki, god of mischief and evil. He knew of one plant Frigga had overlooked. It grew neither on the earth, nor under the earth, but on apple and oak trees. You guessed it--the plant was the lowly mistletoe. Loki made an arrow tip of the mistletoe, gave it to the blind god of winter, Hoder, daring him to shoot Balder. Hoder, believing nothing could hurt Balder shot the arrow, striking Balder dead.

The sky went black and all things in earth and heaven wept over Balder. For three days each element tried to bring Balder back to life. Alas, they were all unsuccessful.

As his mother wept over him, her tears were turned into the pearly white berries on the mistletoe plant. Then to her great joy she realized her tears of sorrow had restored Balder to life. Frigga kissed everyone who passed beneath the tree on which the plant grew.

The story ends with the promise that whoever stands beneath the mistletoe, no harm should befall them, only a kiss, a token of love.

An Evergreen Christmas - Postcard Friendship Friday #93

Here again is this delightful little girl from the early 1900's. One can find her photographs everywhere. Someday I will discover who she was. There is something so endearing about her piquant little face.

As you see, she is holding evergreen boughs. In early History, plants and trees which remained green all year had a special meaning for people in the winter. Just as people today decorate their homes during the festive season with pine, holly, spruce and fir trees, in olden times, peoples hung evergreen boughs over their doors and windows.

Germany

is credited with starting the tradition of the Christmas tree. It is said that Martin Luther, the 16th-century Protestant reformer, first added lighted candles to a tree.

Walking toward his home one winter evening, composing a sermon, he was awed by the brilliance of stars twinkling amidst evergreens. To recapture the scene for his family, he put an evergreen tree in the living room and wired its branches with lighted candles. From that time on, Christians brought decorated trees into their homes. Some built Christmas pyramids of wood and decorated them with evergreens and candles if wood was scarce.

Grammie recycled things before it was popular to do so. She would save old Christmas cards to make into tags for Christmas presents. She always used those scissors with the rick rack edge pattern. This is one she gave to me on a gift long ago. I still love it.

And yes, there is a heart in this beautiful Christmas picture. You can find it in the top of one of the pink roses!

This wonderful unusual card came from a box of old cards given to me by my darling Gramma Gladys. She has the most fabulous collection of Vintage cards and postcards. When she moved from Oregon to Washington, she left several boxes of her collection with me.

I had the blessing of seeing her on my recent trip--she is tinier than ever, a winsome little Grannie elf with her beautiful wrinkled face filled with mischief--and that wonderful shock of pure white hair. She says she can't do a thing with it. She is an adorable little Grandmother.

A Hearty Thanksgiving - Postcard Friendship Friday #90

When we traveled the East Coast years ago, we had the opportunity to see Plymouth Rock (much smaller than I’d visualized) and go through the museum in the town of Plymouth. It was fascinating. I learned many things I did not know about the Pilgrims.

The Pilgrims set ground at Plymouth Rock on December 11, 1620. Their first winter was devastating. I was shocked to discover that by Fall only 56 of the 102 settlers survived. What a lonesome feeling that must have been. So far from home--with no other resources other than what they brought with them.

Thankfully, the harvest of 1621 was a bountiful one. The remaining colonists decided to celebrate with a feast - including the Native Americans who had helped the Pilgrims survive their first year. Happily for all, their feast of thanksgiving lasted three days.

Governor William Bradford sent "four men fowling" after wild ducks and geese. History doesn’t say they actually ate turkey, though. I didn't realize it, but the term "turkey" was used by the Pilgrims to mean any sort of wild bird. They also ate venison along with boiled pumpkin and a type of fried bread made from the corn they’d planted. Included in their feast were berries, watercress, lobster, dried fruit, clams, venison, and plums. Sounds pretty good to me! Looking back on this past year--there are so many things for which to be thankful. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Veterans Day - Postcard Friendship Friday #89

I love this postcard. It reminds me of how much our boys must miss home and family as they serve overseas. Dad often spoke of how much he missed his family and country the years he fought in World War Two.

The history of Veteran's Day in America is an interesting one. After World War One, on November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first Commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…"

This holiday was celebrated with a day off with parades and honoring our war-torn warriors.

In 1968, a law was signed in order to insure three-day weekends for Federal employees by celebrating four national holidays on Mondays: Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Columbus Day. It was thought that these extended weekends would encourage travel, recreational and cultural activities and stimulate greater industrial and commercial production. Many states did not agree with this decision and continued to celebrate the holidays on their original dates.

The first official Veterans Day under the new law was observed with much confusion on October 25, 1971. It was quite apparent that the commemoration of this day was a matter of historic and patriotic significance to a great number of our citizens, and so on September 20th, 1975, President Gerald R. Ford signed a law returning the annual observance of Veterans Day to its original date of November 11, beginning in 1978.

On this day in America, we honor our veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. So many of my family have served in the military--some continue to this day. I thank each of them for their service and sacrifice. I am grateful to every man and woman who have stood--and continue to stand--in the gap for freedom, country, family and home.

King Tut Day - Postcard Friendship Friday #88

Today is King Tut Day! The holiday always falls on November 4^th and celebrates the day King Tutankhamen’s tomb was discovered by Howard Carter and his team.

I have a special place in my heart for King Tut. I was only ten when I presented a paper about this amazing child king to my fifth grade teacher. He was only nine when he took the throne of Egypt and only lived until he was 19. Some researchers believe he died from an accident, others think he might have been murdered.

On this day in 1922, King Tutankhamen's tomb was discovered in Egypt's Valley of Kings. When Carter held the candle to the opening of the tomb, the golden furniture gleamed back at him. His partner, Lord Carnarvon who asked, “Can you see anything?” Carter replied with, “Yes, wonderful things.”

It is said when they first entered the tomb, the air was warm and a faint smell of perfume and oil filled the air. To them, the tomb looked as if it had remained intact as the day it had been sealed.

Traditionally glowing jack-o-lanterns, carved from turnips or gourds, are set on porches and in windows, to welcome Trick or Treaters as they canvas neighborhoods for goodies.

In ancient times, it was thought the lighted pumpkin faces acted as protection against evil spirits. Burning lumps of coal were used inside as a source of light, later to be replaced by candles.

Pumpkins are only found in the western hemisphere so they were completely unknown in Europe before the time of Columbus! Just think, no one had ever tasted Pumpkin Pie back then! In 1584, the French explorer Jacques Cartier reported from the St. Lawrence region that he had found "gros melons", which was translated into English as "ponpions," or pumpkins. In fact, pumpkins have been grown in America for over 5,000 years. Native Americans called pumpkins "isquotersquash."

Did you know pumpkins are not a vegetable - they are a fruit! Pumpkins, like gourds and other varieties of squash are all members of the Cucurbitacae family (just try to pronounce that), which also includes cucumbers, gherkins, and melons.

Halloween Apple Peel Game - Postcard Friendship Friday #86

In ancient times, the Apple Peel Game was quite popular among young people during "Snap Apple Night." An apple was peeled continuously with a paring knife so the peel had no break. When the entire apple peel was cut free, it was tossed over the shoulder without looking. It was said the peel would fall in the shape of a letter of the alphabet. This was thought to be the first letter of the name of one's true love.

Happy "Snap Apple Night" - Postcard Friendship Friday #85

In parts of the north of England, Halloween was known as Nut-crack Night. Nuts were put on the fire and, according to their behavior in the flames, forecast faithfulness in sweethearts and the success, or failure of marriages.

In Lancashire, England 'Lating' or 'Lighting the witches' was an important Halloween custom. People would carry candles from eleven to midnight. If the candles burned steadily the carriers were safe for the season, but if the witches blew them out, the omen was bad indeed.

Halloween was also sometimes called Snap Apple Night. The original game of Snap Apple was played with apples suspended on a long piece of string. Players had to try an bite the apple without using their hands. Another way to play the game was to fix an apple and a lighted candle at opposite ends of a stick suspended horizontally and to swing the stick round. The object was to catch the apple between the teeth whilst avoiding the candle. Bobbing for Apples in a vat of water is a much safer variation of this game!

Many places in England combined Halloween with Mischief Night when boys played all kinds of practical jokes on their neighbors. They changed shop signs, took gates off their hinges, whitewashed doors, and tied door latches. Things which, if done today, might land them in the jailhouse!

Bobbing for Apples

I adore this picture--reminds me of harvest parties of the past, where bobbing apples was a part of the fun festivities--though this young man doesn't seem to happy, does he?

Bobbing for Apples is played by filling a tub with water and putting apples in the water. The apples bob on the surface of the water. The first to grab an apple in one's teeth wins. Since a person isn't allowed to use anything but their teeth, catching an apple floating in water, isn't as easy as it may sound! I say that from personal experience. Since players aren't allowed to use their hands, it's all in the "dooking" as they say in Scotland.

In ancient times, the first "single" person to capture an apple in their teeth is said to have the blessing of becoming the first to be married in the group. In Ireland, this game is known as "Snap Apple." In other places Snapp Apple Night is another name for Halloween.

Stingy Jack - Postcard Friendship Friday #84

I posted the story of Stingy Jack last year during Halloween--I loved this unusual story so much, I decided to post it again! Happy Halloween!

The term "jack-o-lantern" came from the fae Irish in the form of a mythical story about a character named Stingy Jack. Jack was a drunkard who, having invited the Devil for a drink, requested the Devil transform himself into money to pay for the drinks. When the Devil did so, Jack took the money and put it in his pocket next to a silver cross. The Devil, unable to transform himself into his original form because of the cross, was trapped.

So Jack made a deal with the Devil--he would not bother Jack and would leave him alone for a year if he was allowed to change back. The Devil, agreeable to this, came back to Jack in a year. However, a year later when confronted by the Devil, Jack tricked the Devil into climbing a tree to pick a piece of fruit. Once the Devil was in the tree, Jack carved a cross in the trunk of the tree, preventing the Devil from descending, until he agreed once again not to bother Jack for another ten years.

When poor Stingy Jack died a short time later, neither God nor the Devil would accept him into their kingdom. But the Devil sent Jack away into the night with only a hot coal to light his way, which Jack put into a hollowed out turnip. Thus began the tradition of jack-o-lanterns.

For many years jack-o-lanterns were carved from large turnips. However, in the 1800s, Irish immigrants discovered America's native orange pumpkin, which lent itself even better to the tradition of carving out lanterns. Thus our tradition of carving pumpkins for Hallows Eve.

I have always loved fairytales and fairies--however, in my research I discovered a scary tradition about fairies and goblins on Hallows Eve! It is whispered that in the hours between dusk and midnight, fairies and goblins go out to collect as many souls as they can.

To rescue an imprisoned soul, a person could collect the dust from beneath the feet of fairies and goblins, then throw it at these creatures--who would then would be obliged to release all the souls they held captive. Have you ever wondered what fairy dust was made of? Me too! Now we know!

Sissy Clytie is Home!

I am posting this lovely picture of a girl with flowers, in celebration of my darling Sister Clytie's release from the hospital. God was protecting her.

As so many prayers and thoughts were being sent up on Clytie's behalf, the emergency room doctor got a bee in his bonnet. Though the heart tests came back as normal and just a little high, he was still convinced there was a blockage in her heart and he would not give up looking. He even asked for two-year old data from another hospital in order to find the problem. Thank God! Because of this doctor's persistence, Sissy is going to be fine.

Clytie had an angiogram yesterday morning, during which the actual blockage was discovered. They cleared the vein and put in a stent. I spent yesterday afternoon with Clytie in the hospital and had the wonderful privilege of picking her up and bringing her home today.

THANK YOU everyone for your thoughts and prayers. I am convinced there was an angel hanging over that doctor's shoulder, telling him to look further, when the tests said something completely different than the truth.

Sissy Clytie is in the Hospital

This morning I awoke with a start. My eyes flew open and I sat straight up in bed. I should call Sissy, I thought. I was sure it was a bit too early, so I waited.

Not too long after that Mumsie called to let me know Sissy had been taken to the hospital. She had been rushed to emergency in horrible pain. She'd been having trouble with bad acid reflux--had gone into local emergency a week or so ago. Tests came back inconclusive, so they sent her home with some meds for heartburn.

Turns out she has a blockage in her heart. Tomorrow she goes in for an angiogram to find out where the blockage is, then they will put in a stint. This is so frightening. Sissy--darling Queen of Hearts--is beloved to so many people. Clytie is heart of my heart. I don't know what the world would be like without her in it.

I would appreciate your prayers for her complete and rapid recovery. Please drop by and leave her a note on her found hearts blog, Random Hearts. I know she will be so encouraged to hear your messages of encouragement.

I will keep you updated on how she is doing.

I have always loved black cats. It is unfortunate they get so much bad press here in America. Their reputation is not so bad in other places. In Scotland, a strange black cat on a porch is said to bring prosperity to the owner. In other lore, if a white hair is found on a black cat, it is considered to be good luck, but woe to the one who plucks it out! In Asia and the UK, the black cat carries good tidings, and to dream of a black cat foretells good fortune.

My family's history with black cats started with my Dad, who as a boy companied with a cat named Snow. When I was a little girl, we had a little black cat, with a swatch of white under her chin--who's name was Snow. When my children were young we miraculously rescued a tiny black kitten from between the walls of the old Carriage House. She was named Snow, too. Fairy Secrets - Postcard Friendship Friday #81

I apologize for getting PFF up so late. I was gone for a speaking engagement over the past three days and got a very late start this morning!

We were located in the mountains just out of Lebanon, Ore. There was a small lake where the mist maidens danced in the early mornings. There was a stand of fir trees gracing the grounds--one could walk beneath them upon paths carpeted with fir needles, where forest leaves, flowers and mosses grew in delicate profusion. I even found an amazing castle stump glowing in a clearing amidst some young firs. And then I saw a little doorway at the top of a broken tree which looked for all the world like a faery condo. (grin)

I love fairies--they're God's littlest angels, you know. I imagine many of the secrets of faeries keep, would have to do with the seasons--how to coax flowers from their sleep in Spring, what the sunflower sings as it follows the sun, and how to splash color on Fall leaves. I am sure they know the secret of how to spread the fragile ice feathers I find etched across my windshield on cold winter mornings. I would love to sit down and talk with a faery about these things someday. (grin) As often as they visit my garden, I am sure that day will come.

The Twin Towers - Postcard Friendship Friday #80

Sunday is the ten year anniversary of September 11. That date was a defining moment in the history of the United States. And in the lives of me and my family.

I remember that spring, just days before the recovery effort was declared finished, my family and I had the opportunity to visit Ground Zero. That great scar in the earth had left another one in my heart.

I will never forget standing on the viewing platform that cold cloudy day. The hundreds of people gathered there, were silent as they walked up the ramps and stood together. The air was eerily quiet. It was as though the bare wood on the ramp was covered with a thick layer of dust. As you know New York City never rests--it is like the ceaseless roar of a great ocean. But there, sound was somehow dampened.

My husband stood close, as my daughters and I closed our eyes and began to sing Amazing Grace in three-part harmony. Some of the people in the crowd joined in. Then as we sang the words, "bright shining as the sun..." Something incredible happened. There was a sudden instantaneous break in those cold, dark clouds--a brilliant beam of sunlight burst through, beaming down, sweeping over the huge American Flag, covering Ground Zero where so many lost their lives. Then brightness touching our faces, embracing the hundreds on the viewing platform with dazzling warmth.

As we finished the song, we wrapped our arms around each other, heads bowed and we wept. I don't know how long we stood there, tears slipping down our faces--but when we lifted our heads, we were alone. The hundreds of people standing with us had moved so softly we hadn't realized they had gone.

Though each group was only allowed 15 minutes, the guards told us to stay as long as we wished. And we did--praying for all the families who's loved ones had died there, for our nation and for the world.

That day touched me and my family in a way I cannot even put into words. What a blessing it was to feel--literally--the warmth of God's grace. Suffice it to say none of us will ever forget 9/11, or the people who died that day in the World Trade Center.

Crazy 'Boutcha - Guest Heart Thursday

Here is another Valentine's Day card from my collection. I've been told this card was probably produced in the 1940's in the USA. I adore this little pig-tailed cutie--her canoe is darling, too. Would a canoe with hearts be just the thing? With all this warm weather, a canoe trip also seems just fine to me. A wonderful way to beat the heat.

She's on the Telephone - Postcard Friendship Friday #79

In January 1878, the Boston Telephone Dispatch company hired only boys as operators. However, as the saying goes, "boy will be boys." People began to complain when the youngsters showed their impatience with extremely rude behavior. This included pranks and cursing. As a result the company decided to hire women instead.

On September 1, 1878, Emma was hired as the very first women telephone operator in history. She worked as a telephone operator for 37 years, retiring in 1915. Everyone loved Emma's soothing, cultured voice. Because of people's overwhelmingly positive response to her intelligence, gentle manner and great patience, those rambunctious boys were soon exclusively replaced by all women operators.

The rules to be a telephone operator were stringent. A woman had to be unmarried, between the ages of seventeen and twenty-six. She had to look prim and proper and her arms had to be long enough to reach the top of the tall telephone switchboard! I was not able to discover how long a woman's arms had to be--the idea of a group of extremely long-armed women put a really funny picture in my mind...

At some point in her career, Emma was hired by Alexander Graham Bell who is credited with inventing the first practical telephone. She was paid a salary of $10 per month for a 54 hour week. Incredibly she is said to be able to remember every number in the telephone directory of the New England Telephone Company.

Apparently Emma had a great sense of humor. It was said she was always grateful her parents did not give her the name "Imma." Can you imagine a telephone operator answering the line saying, "Hello, Imma Nut, may I help you?"

I wonder what Emma would think of today's wireless smart phones. My own precious Grandfather, born in the late 1800's would rarely answer a telephone. He could not understand how voices could be transmitted over wire and was quite skeptical of them.

Made in the USA, this Valentine's Day Card was made to stand, by folding down one side. This card was probably printed in the 1940's. Notice the gum in her bag and how much she is enjoying stretching the gum from mouth to fingers. What kid wouldn't?! I also love her shoes, hat, dress--and that little duck is just adorable.

Butterfly Rides

I am not sure where I came across this image--it has been in my cyber collection for many years. These days I credit and link back to where I find the images I love. But back in the early days I didn't realize it was an important part of sharing ephemera.

I know--this is a Christmas card, but I just couldn't resist putting it up today. Besides--does this look like a Christmas card to you? I was surprised.

I've been watching the graceful flight of the butterflies in my garden. In my mind's eye, I can see the faeries who ride on their backs. (grin) I'm sure they look just like this.

I know, I know...I have a GREAT imagination! Faeries--God's littlest angels.

Prayers in the Storm

This lovely old postcard is the opposite of what people along the Eastern Seaboard of the United States are experiencing as I type this. Our hearts and prayers go out to those caught in the swath of that immense storm. My prayer for each of you is that you will experience God's peace in the midst of the storm--like the peace reflected in this picture.

It is calm here on the West Coast--we watch these events unfolding over the television. What a frightening storm. Our hearts are with you, our prayers surround you...

National Dog Day - Postcard Friendship Friday #78

When I was a little girl I had a stuffed Cocker Spaniel I named Fluff. Fluff still lives--in a keepsake box full of childhood treasures. I've had many dog friends over the years. It is a compliment when I say our little cat, Princess Twinkle Toes, has dog characteristics. I would never tell her, so Shhhhhh...."

Just this morning I saw the news article of a dog named Hawkeye, who, even as Navy Seal Jon Tumilson, lay in his coffin during his memorial service -- would not leave his master's side. Poignant, amazing and incredible is the love of a Dog.

In the United States, National Dog Day has two goals. The first is to rescue dogs from homelessness and abuse. The second is to honor dogs for all that they do for us. In addition to giving love and companionship, dogs help us out in countless ways. They are watchdogs for our safety. They lead the blind. Dogs aid in search and rescue, some seek out bombs and drugs. Others can sniff out cancer, still others protect citizens as they serve on the police force in k-nine units.

National Dog Day was created by the National Dog Day Foundation. Their motto is "Saving 10,000 Dogs - One Day at a Time". To learn more about this wonderful group, contact the National Dog Day Foundation.

National Aviation Day - Postcard Friendship Friday #77

Last week I was talking Vern, a dear friend of mine--he is actually related to the Wright brothers. He tells me, when he was a young man, he had the chance to meet Orville, still living at that time. As a young person, he didn't understand the significance of the Wright Brothers, so the chance passed him by. I love hearing Vern's stories. The things he's lived through, the experiences he's had, are fascinating!

Another friend of mine still shudders each time he boards an airplane. "It's unnatural," he says, "that airplanes are heavier than air and can actually fly!" But look how one man's impossible dream changed, not only our world, but history itself.

National Aviation Day is observed on the birthday of aviator pilot Orville Wright. As is known, the Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur, were pioneer aviators in the United States. Orville was the first person to successfully fly an airplane. His first flight was December 17, 1903 at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.

Orville and his brother Wilbur are given credit for building the Wright Flyer, the world’s first successful airplane with aircraft controls which enabled them to steer the plane. Though they were not the first to build and fly experimental aircraft, the brothers were the first to invent aircraft controls which made fixed wing flight possible. Can you imagine.

In 1939, American President Franklin Roosevelt proclaimed August 19 to be National Aviation Day. Happy Aviation Day Everyone!

Happy Middle Child's Day - Postcard Friendship Friday #76

I was born the eldest of six. Growing up, I never thought about what it would be like to be a middle child. I remember one of Sissy's favorite books was The Middle Sister. Now that we are older, my middle sister is one of my very best Friends. I like the idea of a holiday which gives a well deserved recognition to the wonderful and special middle child of the family.

If you grew as up the middle child with both older and younger siblings, you know the feeling of the "middle child syndrome" from a from a very personal perspective.

It is said the first child is the first child. He, or she, has all of Mom and Dad before the second child comes along. The final child is and always will be the baby of the family. Older and younger children tend to be more outgoing, or extroverted. The Middle Child tends to be more introverted, quieter, perhaps a bit of a loner--but with the amazing ability to get along with just about anyone. Middle children tend to be wise watchers.

It is fair and fitting that we celebrate and place into the limelight, the middle child on this day.

So, my treasured Sissy, go out and enjoy this day to the fullest. You truly are a wonderful, talented, special person! I am one of your biggest fans and I am so proud to be your big sister. I have always deeply admired you and your vivid heart. ((hugs))

Sweet Cat

I have been out of touch for a few weeks because my computer broke down. Its poor motherboard gave up the ghost because of a bad power source. It is up and running as of yesterday, so here I am. The above card is especially precious to me, as it was sent to me by my good friend Catherine.

The above is of the back of the card--isn't that just the cutest thing? I wonder where its tail went?

We have a new kitten leaping through our lives these days--her markings are very similar to these. Her name is Princess Twinkle Toes in honor of her wonderfully odd paws--she has six toes on each foot!

There is a lot of joy to be found in the love of a kitten.

I adore this beautiful postcard of a girl feeding the doves. There is something so ethereal about it--a bit of magic sprinkled throughout. I especially love summer here in Oregon. There are birds everywhere. I am grateful to hear their song in the early morning just before the sun rises--including the call of the mourning dove who lives at the top of the great Cedar tree.

Thank you for all your encouraging remarks last week. My computer is still gone--I'm using my husband's machine to upload this week's PFF. What a great guy! (grin) Anyhow--a friend of ours is rebuilding my computer, I should hopefully have it back by this afternoon, or tomorrow. It has been an eye-opener, as to how much I do rely upon my computer to do so many things. Thanks again for your generousity and understanding!

Rat Catcher's Day - Postcard Friendship Friday #73

There seems to be some confusion about the actual date of Rat Catcher's Day--a celebration commemorating the myth of the Pied Piper of Hamelin, Germany. The confusion comes because the Brothers Grimm cited June 26, 1284, as the date the legendary Pied Piper led all the children out of the town, while the poem by Robert Browning gives the date as July 22, 1376.

According to the Brother's Grimm, Legend has it that the town of Hamelin, Germany was overrun with rats. The rodents ate the food, fouled the water and made the people very sick. At the height of this infestation a strange man wearing a coat of many colors arrived in town. He was brought to the leaders of the town, where he told the town council he was a rat catcher and could free the town of the plague of rats for a fee.

The citizens were desperate and pledged to pay him the money he'd asked for. Then the oddly dressed man extracted a fife from his knapsack and began to play. The the people's amazement, all the rats came running out to gather around the Pied Piper in a seething, bare-tailed mass. As he played, he led the rats straight into the River Weser where they drowned.

Sadly, the townspeople, now freed of the plague of rats, regretted their promise and refused to pay the Piper.

Later that year, the Pied Piper came back, but this time he wore a tall red hat and was dressed as a huntsman. Since it was Sunday, all the adults were attending church. Once more the Piper sounded his pipe. The babysitter was unable to stop all the town's children, ages four and above, from following the man--they skipped merrily along behind him, to disappear with the Piper through a doorway which had appeared inside a cave in the side of a mountain.

The babysitter carried the news of the children back to the town. Anxious parents ran in droves to the town gates seeking their children. But by then, the door in the cave had vanished.

Legend has it 130 children were lost. Two had lagged behind and came back. One of them was blind and the other mute. The blind child was not able to point out the place, but was able to tell how they had followed the piper. The mute child was able to point out the place, although he (or she) had heard nothing. Another little boy in shirtsleeves had gone along with the others, but had turned back to fetch his jacket and thus escaped the tragedy, for when he returned, the door in the cave had disappeared. The cave is still shown to this day.

The mountain near Hamelin where the children are said to have disappeared is called Poppenberg. Two stone monuments in the form of crosses have been erected there, one on the left side, one on the right. Some say the children who were led into the cave, lived to emerge from a mountain in Transylvania.

The following lines were inscribed on the town hall:

In the year 1284 after the birth of Christ

From Hameln were led away

One hundred thirty children, born at this place

Led away by a piper into a mountain.

Most legends contain a grain of truth. One wonders about the real story behind this old German Legend.

Bath Time Baby

When we were kids, Mom would make all of us take a bath every Saturday evening. We never wanted to take that bath--especially in summertime. We'd been playing in the creek, splashing in Grandma's pool, running through the sprinkler and soaking each other with the hose--wasn't that good enough? That weekly bath would cleanse us from the week's wear and tear--readying us for church the following day.

When I was very small, Mom would sing, "Fuzzy Wuzzy was a bear, Fuzzy Wuzzy had no hair, Fuzzy Wuzzy wasn't fuzzy was he?" Singing that song was the only way she could get me to cooperate when she shampooed my hair.

This picture reminds me of all the babies I've ever known. I'm sure all babies have bathed in a sink, or a pan of water at one time or another--What splashings, what gigglings, what fun!

Sometimes I miss those days--but not always.

I especially love this wonderful old card, because it reminds me of my sisters and I. I was 14 and Clytie was 12 when our darling little sister Leigh was born. She adored us, and we thought she was wonderful. That love continues to this day--though my youngest Sissy is taller than me and a Mom herself.

How blessed I am to have such incredibly wonderful sisters. I think I might be one of the most blessed people I know. (grin)

This postcard with its poetic greeting is my wish for each of you this early Friday morning. Hearing today's national weather reports, it seems it is sunny everywhere except where I live. As I type this, the clouds are scudding thick over the rising sun--though they say (who are they anyway) it will clear off later and will reach the mid-70's.

In the meantime, I walk in my garden where the faeries flit over the flowers. The flowers, of course call their greetings--not only to these tiny beings--but to me. Sometimes they even sing.

Camp Girl - Guest Heart Thursday

As you can see, this little Valentine's Day Card is perfect for summer vacation! This chic girl is ready for every challenge. Her tent is up, the campfire is built and don't those eggs she's cooking look wonderful!

However, this little miss is sitting awfully close to that brightly flaming fire. There's a little metal rivet. Her arm moves the cast iron skillet up and down--I think she'd better lift that pan a bit higher, or those eggs will be toast!

This is a card from the late 1950's, part of the collection given to me by my darling Gramma Gladys. I adore the loyal little pooch with his ear up. He's listening to the notes and seems to like what he's hearing. I especially love the musical aspect of this precious card. This is a note from a friend which brings melody to one's heart.

Friends who bring music into our lives--not just the kind we hear with our ears--but the music of a smile, words of encouragement, prayer, hugs, and loving kindnesses, are rare and wonderful.

Video Games Day--How Life has Changed - Postcard Friendship Friday #71

As you can see the darling little girl above is playing the old fashioned way. I still have my very first doll. Her name was Thumbelina. I was shocked to discover there is an actual National Video Games Day here in America on September 12th. I was even more surprised when I learned that in most techie circles, today, July 8th, is also celebrated as Video Games Day.

I have no idea who started Video Games Day, but it seems a bit odd to schedule it smack dab in the middle of summer's hottest days. If I were a kid, I'd be out and about--in, or near water! This special celebration celebrates popular electronic gaming platforms and playing fields. It is advertised that today, gamers get to enjoy an entire day of plugged-in fun.

As for me, I think I'd rather play the old fashioned-type games. Games where I can hold the cards, touch the game boards, etc., It can be fascinating to watch the screen when someone else is playing 'em--but to actually play?! My brain just doesn't work that way. Video games (though I'm told by most young'uns I know, that they're wonderful fun) are confusing to me and give me a headache! That being said, happy Video Games Day everyone!

Our Country Forever - Postcard Friendship Friday #70

Living in the United States, it is sometimes hard to fathom there are people who live in places where they are not allowed the freedoms to which I am accustomed. Where I live, we celebrate our rare Freedom with a parade, waterfront park activities such as live music and two nights of fireworks. Once known as Decoration Day, the Fourth of July is a major American Holiday.

This week our town's newspaper printed the Declaration of Independence, which took up one whole page. I read through the entire thing. I haven't read it through since I was in school. What an incredible document.

The Declaration of Independence is a justification of the American Revolution, citing grievances against King George III. It is also a landmark philosophical statement, drawing on the writings of philosophers John Locke and Jean Jacques Rousseau. It affirms all people are creatures of God, with certain natural rights, or liberties, which cannot be violated.

This Declaration and the American Revolution have since inspired freedom-seekers the around the world. I am so grateful to have been born in America, where the rights of all citizens are upheld.

I hope we never take our freedom for granted.

Right on Deck - Guest Heart Thursday

I love this old valentine. His sailor suit is just wonderful! When I was perusing through my card collection this morning, I had a flash of memory. I remember when I was very young--four or five years old, my adored Uncle Jody came to visit. He wore a sailor suit, hat and all. I thought he was (next to my Daddy) the most handsome fellow I'd ever seen. Uncle Joe loved all of us so much. I do miss him. I can still see his smile and hear his voice.

This Sailor also reminds me of Tweety Bird from Looney Tunes. I think I'd sail along with this dapper chick any time.

Lady's Slipper - Sunday Scans

This beautiful card is from our Grandma Jenny's collection! She loved flowers of all kinds--including the Lady's Slipper.

I love lady's slippers. In our childhood, the only Lady's Slipper we found growing in our woods was so rare, it stuck in my memory as a gloriously magical moment. We found her delicate blooms at the top of the canyon in a meadow of moss where the wild hazelnut and fragrant fir trees tangled a green roof overhead. Once her blooms had faded we never saw her again. I remember going back year after year to see if she'd returned. She never did.

Years later, my family and I stayed with a dear couple in the mountains of Northern California. The woods there were filled with lady's slippers. What a beautiful, magical place to walk--one had to be careful of one's footsteps there were so many of these wonderful flowers. Someday I shall paint that whimsical wooded forest.

Good Old Summertime - Postcard Friendship Friday #69

Though it is officially summer now, summertime has been slow in visiting the Pacific Northwest. Happily, the weather man says sunshine may finally break through our grey drizzly clouds. Speaking of drizzly scribbles -- the back of this postcard made me laugh. I wonder what that was all about?

My sisters and I were what we used to call tomboys. Back then, my siblings, cousins and I would often head for the canyon, where we built forts under the cedar trees, teepees from fir branches and followed deer trails to incredibly magical places. We learned to walk barefoot through the woods without a sound. We waded in the cold "crik" waters, chased crawdads, metallic colored bugs and beautiful butterflies. We sampled huckleberries, thimble berries, wild blackberries and strawberries. We learned to eat sour grass, licorice fern root, wild mint and water cress.

Everything changed the day I suddenly became aware of boys as more than buddies. I remember when a friend of mine taught me how to go "sparking" with a fellow in the moonlight -- which, isn't what you think. Did you know wintergreen breath mints spark in your teeth when you chew them in the dark? 'Tis true. You ought to try it -- especially with a fellow you love, under a smiling summer moon.

Ah, good old summertime!

This picture is actually from an old fairytale book in my collection. I can't recall what the story was, but this lovely drawing reminds me of my own Daddy's stories. Because of Dad's stories, I married a storyteller. I still remember the wonderful stories my husband would tell the children when they were small.

Storytelling is a wonderful, magical gifting. How grateful I am for the storytellers in my life.

There were six of us in all--I'm sure there were moments when Daddy wondered about having so many! This postcard brought to mind all the hours Dad must have held crying babies over the years. I still love being a part of a big family.

When I think of Dad, my heart is happy. What a dear Father he is--He is my hero.

I remember his strong arms--As a little girl, I always felt so safe with my Daddy. Now he is old. His strength is fading. Those dear eyes don't see as well. How precious he is to me. His unconditional love, kindness, fairness and strength have colored my life with beauty. As an adult, looking around our world, I have realized how blessed my siblings and I are, to have this strong, gentle man as our Father.

Now in his twilight years, I find myself treasuring every moment I spend with Dad. Dear beloved Daddy. Happy Father's Day!

Rapunzel, Rapunzel, Let Down Your Hair

I have always loved the fairytale about Rapunzel. Though, in real life, having such long hair seems like it would be a hassle!

This beautiful woman from long ago, has plenty of hair to be sure.

I can't imagine how heavy her hair must have been. How would a person live with that much hair in everyday life? Just brushing it out would take all day--let alone washing and drying it all. Then, would she wear it up? Put it into braids? What do you think?

She has a lovely profile.

Flag Day - Postcard Friendship Friday #67

When I was little, I believed flags flown on June 14, were to celebrate the day I was born. In school, I soon discovered Flag Day actually originated in 1885, by a Wisconsin school teacher, Mr. B.J. Cigrand. This wonderful teacher pushed hard for a special day to celebrate the birthday of the American Flag.

The idea caught on--on June 14, 1889, George Balch, a teacher from New York City, planned Flag 'Birthday' celebrations for the children of his school. Later on, these celebrations were adopted by the State Board of Education of New York. In 1891, the Betsy Ross House in Philadelphia held a Flag Day celebration and on June 14 of the following year, the New York Society of the Sons of the Revolution, celebrated Flag Day.

In 1914, Franklin K. Lane, United States Secretary of the Interior spoke these stirring words--words he said came from the Flag itself, "I am what you make me; nothing more. I swing before your eyes as a bright gleam of color, a symbol of yourself."

But it wasn't until August 3rd, 1949, that President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day.

Armed Forces Day - Postcard Friendship Friday #64

Armed Forces Day in the United States, salutes men and women of every branch of military service. These brave individuals are often called upon at a moment's notice to perform risky and perilous missions for Freedom and country. There are courageous men from every generation of my family's history, who fought valiantly for Freedom. I am deeply grateful for their sacrifice.

Up until the 1950's, each branch of the American military had their own day of celebration. But on August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of Armed Forces Day. This new holiday consolidated honoring the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard into one fabulous celebration. On February 20, 1950, President Harry Truman proclaimed Armed Forces Day as a national holiday. All branches of American military celebrated the first Armed Forces Day on May 20, 1950.

I intend on calling my Dad today--to thank that grand old soldier for his personal sacrifice and bravery. In WW2, Dad was captured by the Nazis. He survived months of captivity in one of the worst Nazi war camps on record--he barely made it out with his life. He is our hero.

In France, Mother's Day is celebrated the last Sunday of May with a cake resembling a bouquet of flowers. This lovely traditional cake is followed by a lavish family dinner.

Children in France make cards, crafts or write poems for their mothers. Many families treat their mothers by cooking a breakfast or giving her a treat of a perfect mother’s day brunch in style.

In France whether it’s a pleasant conversation over a glass of wine, organizing a party, or playing indoor and outdoor games with family, mother’s day is made playful and celebratory. Presenting Moms with gift baskets which might contain gourmet chocolates, special wines and cheeses, along with a book by a favorite author, cosmetics and perfumes, is a wonderful tradition.

The French really know how to spoil their Mothers!

Dancing the May Pole - Postcard Friendship Friday #61

When I attended High School, May Day was the big celebration. Every Spring we voted for our May Day Queen and her court. The celebration was in the big gym, where there was music by the choir, band and orchestra and the queen was introduced with a special dance. The dresses the court wore--with big hoop skirts--were amazing.

But my favorite part was winding of the May Pole by the Freshmen girls. When I was a freshman I was in the group who danced around the May Pole. I still have the pretty purple dress I wore.

Colorful crepe paper ribbons were attached to the top of the pole. As music played, one group of us walked to the right, the others to the left. It was a pretty dance, where we would dip under the ribbon of the first person, then go over the ribbon of the next and so on.

The winding of the Maypole was a traditional activity each spring. I believe May Day is still celebrated in this manner at my old Alma Mater.

Here is another of Grammie Jenny's cards. This is from her best Friend Ruth. Their friendship was so rich and beautiful. I'm so glad we have a record of their loving hearts toward one another. I especially love this card with it's bright and cheery pansies.

Can you believe I have been hosting Postcard Friendship Friday for 60 weeks now?! It feels I began hosting PFF just yesterday. I'm so grateful to all of you for your participation.

Since it is Easter Weekend, I decided to share one of my favorite stories from the Bible. What joy Mary must have felt when she heard her dear Friend call her name.

Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!”

So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ head. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen. Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.) Then the disciples went back to where they were staying.

Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.

They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?”

They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.” At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus.

He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?”

Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.”

Jesus said to her, “Mary.”

She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”).

Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’”

Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her. John 20:1-18 (NIV)

Here's another funny Valentine card from my collection. This one was printed in the United States in the late 1940/'s. The coy look in this ducky's eyes, along with those fabulous britches and those, er, thorny feet--make him quite a catch!
