Marry Me -Postcard Friendship Friday #311

Tomorrow my sweet young friends Nathan and Jennika will be joining their lives in marriage.  I am so happy for these dear ones.  Nathan was loved and mentored by my sweet Alan, and has been like a son to me since my husband passed away.

Above you see a drawing I made for them as their wedding gift! Jennika is perfect for Nathan.  I am SO happy for them!  This postcard is dedicated to this sweet couple and to honor the wonderful adventure ahead of them.

Have a lovely day, dear Friends, and Happy Postcard Friendship Friday!

Mother's Love -Postcard Friendship Friday #310

Although the storm and stress of fate,
The bonds of life may strain, or sever.
The endless chain of Mother-love
Will bind the world forever.

What lovely words.  I have the world's most fantastic Mom.  She is such a lovely, talented, precious Friend.  I wish I would have known her better as a teenager--these days I treasure the beauty and value of my relationship with my Mother.  I am surrounded by her love and wonderful friendship.  I don't know what I would do without my darling Mum.  I am blessed to be her daughter.

She was one of the speakers at the retreat last weekend.  She is gifted in so many ways, writing, art, and speaking.  I didn't realize it, but one of her books was recently translated into Korean!

As  Mom spoke, I learned a lot I didn't know, and frequently found myself in tears.  So many ladies came up afterward to tell me how blessed they were to have heard her speak.  The entire weekend was incredible!

And so I say now--a little early--My dearest, darling Mumsie, happy Mother's Day!

Have a lovely day, dear Friends, and Happy Postcard Friendship Friday!

Love of a Child -Postcard Friendship Friday #309

I posted this vintage postcard in 2010 and decided it was time to put it up again.  I own a 100 year old cookbook, which details all the things a woman was responsible to do in the late 1800's.

These amazing women tended a garden, grew their own food, milked the cow, made cloth and sewed clothing.  They made their own soap and cooked over a wood-stove.  All while watching over her children, teaching them as she went.  These are only a few things they had to do in the "olden days."  The author of the cookbook advises, "Be sure to sit down to do your chores, as much as is possible."  That is wonderful advice!

Yet, today the sentiment is true--children who's Mothers deeply love them are indeed blessed. I will always hold our own dear Mumsie in high esteem. She is beautiful, brave and kind.

Life is shorter than we think, dear Friends.  Take time out to hug your Mother and to love your children.

Happy Postcard Friendship Friday, dear Friends!

Happiness is a Kitten and a Dolly -Postcard Friendship Friday #308

When I was a tiny girl, I adored dolls and cats, among other things.  I love this postcard so much, I am re-posting it.  This sweet girl is up to something I am sure.  I adore the mischievous sparkle in this little girl's eye--and the look on the kitten's face is priceless!

I am sharing this in honor of my darling little niece, who's loving heart and funny antics make me smile.

Thank you for dropping by, dear Friends.  ((Hugs))  Have a lovely weekend and Happy Paint Party Friday!

It's April Fools Day! -Postcard Friendship Friday #307

When the dignitaries at large changed the calendar date of New Year’s Day from April 1st to January 1st in the 1700’s, some folks refused to make the change.  These people were labeled "fools.”  People who no longer celebrated New Years on April 1st made fun of those who still did.

Those who would not acknowledge the change in calendar were called "poisson d'avril," or "April fish" because a young naive fish is easily caught.  As a  joke people would attach a paper fish to a person’s back without their knowing it.  They were sent on “fool” errands.  They were even sent invitations to parties which never materialized as well as other not so nice practical jokes.

Eventually playing pranks on everyone April 1st became the custom. The tradition spread to Britain and Scotland in the 18th century and was introduced to the American colonies by the English and the French. Since those days, April Fool's Day is celebrated everywhere, with each country commemorating the holiday in its own way.

In Scotland, April Fool's Day is devoted to spoofs involving one’s, er, behind and is called Taily Day.  These jokes are known as April 'Gowk' which is a cuckoo bird. It is a fact that the origins of the "Kick Me" sign can be traced back to the Scottish observance.

In England, jokes are played only in the morning. Fools are called 'gobs' or 'gobby' and the victim of a joke is called a 'noodle.'  It was considered back luck to play a practical joke on someone after noon.

In America, pranks are played all day--a favorite from my childhood would be to ask someone if their shoe was untied.  When the person would look to see--we'd say, "Made ya look!"

In Rome, the holiday is known as Festival of Hilaria, celebrating the resurrection of the god Attis, is on March 25 and is referred to as "Roman Laughing Day."

In Portugal, April Fool's Day falls on the Sunday and Monday before Lent. In this celebration, some  people throw flour at their friends.  Can you imagine?

The Huli Festival is celebrated on March 31 in India. People play jokes on one another and smear colors on one another, thus celebrating the arrival of Spring.

It is a truth that people everywhere dearly love to laugh.  Laughter is truly good for one's soul.

Happy April Fool's Day and have a lovely Postcard Friendship Friday!
